Slovakia and Hungary, both dependent on Russian gas, have raised concerns about the possibility of supply cuts.

When Fico becomes prime minister again in October 2023, Slovakia suspended military aid to Ukraine.

However, he insisted that he wants to be a “good, friendly neighbor” with Ukraine.

Fico’s meeting with Putin came as the leaders of Italy, Sweden, Greece and Finland met for a security summit on Sunday.

Speaking later, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that Russia is a “permanent and dangerous threat” to the EU.

He also stressed the importance of increasing defense spending and support for Ukraine.
