Young college basketball fan ends game after charmingly storms court: ‘I don’t know whose kid it is’

a conference match between Radford men’s basketball team and Gardner-Webb was briefly delayed Wednesday night when a young fan stormed the court and had to be escorted out by one of the Highlanders.

With just over a minute left in the second half and Radford up by three, a young fan came onto the court and started running around as the players and coaches watched in confusion.

“And we’ve got a kid on the floor,” said the game’s broadcasters in shock. “The sixth man is on the ground here. I don’t know whose child it is. Do we have parents?”

The young fan continued to run around before Radford guard redshirt senior Truth Harris stepped in and handed the little boy off to an employee near the court.

It didn’t distract the Mountaineers, who won the game 79-75 and improved to 3-1. Big South Conference Play for and tie for the top spot in the standings with High Point and UNC Asheville.

The Big South released a statement after the game about the “pint-sized” outage, adding that the boy was safely reunited with his parents.

“In an unprecedented and truly pint-sized moment of excitement, one minute into last night’s Gardner-Webb-Radford basketball game, a young ‘fan’ stormed the court,” the release read.

“The fan, estimated to be about three feet tall and just shy of kindergarten age, showed impressive agility by dodging the staff and bewildered players. Thanks to the quick thinking of a Radford player (and an apparent babysitter), the situation was safely resolved when the child was removed from the court.”

Radford head coach Darris Nichols joked after the game that he begged the officials not to penalize the team for the excitement of the young fan.

“That was a big part of the game,” he said with a laugh. “When the kid ran into the court, I just told the judge, ‘Please don’t give it to me.’ technical for that.'”
