Winter storm: Five people died as a result of snow in the United States
In other parts of the US, the winter storm also brought dangerous road conditions.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said at least 365 people were involved in crashes Sunday, dozens injured and at least one killed.
In nearby Kansas, one of the worst-hit states, local news reports said two people were killed in a car crash during the storm.
A man was found dead Monday morning outside a bus stop in Houston, Texas, from the cold.
Authorities in Virginia, where more than 300 car accidents were reported between midnight and Monday morning, warned residents to avoid driving in large parts of the state.
According to local media, at least one driver was killed.
Matthew Cappucci, chief meteorologist for the MyRadar weather program, told the BBC that Kansas City had seen its heaviest snow in 32 years.
Some areas near the Ohio River have become “skating rinks” in freezing temperatures, he said.
“The candles are stuck, the cops are stuck, everyone is stuck – stay home,” he said.
