Months of talks led by the conservative Austrian People’s Party ended without a coalition, leaving the president, a former leader of the leftist Greens, with no choice but to look further to the right.
The Freedom Party (FPO) is anti-immigration and pro-Russian.
Its leader, Herbert Kickle, hopes to start negotiations with the conservatives and become chancellor.
Will he succeed?
