Why NBC Canceled Supermarket
Justin Spitzer’s irreverent, beautifully weird workplace comedy Superstore, which ran from 2015 to 2021shared some traits with other popular “office” sitcoms like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation, and, well, The Office — if any of those shows had a running gag about finding themselves cut off legs in their respective workplaces, i.e. So why did the series end after season six?
The answer is both simple and complicated if I’m honest; the main star decided to leave the series to pursue new opportunities, and the global pandemic stopped almost all human interaction and work for a while (although the show really made the most of this situation, so to speak). However, let’s answer for a moment. “Superstore,” as the title suggests, takes place in a fictional department store called Cloud 9 — which certainly bears some resemblance to Targets and Walmarts across the country — and a separate branch in St. Louis, Missouri, home to a colorful warehouse characters.
Jonah Sims, played by Ben Feldman, is the audience’s point of entry into the show’s social ecosystem — Jonah takes a job there after dropping out of business school, immediately falling out with his colleagues — and during his time at Cloud 9, Jonah works led by Deputy Manager Amy Sosa (America Ferrero), surprisingly intense Assistant Store Manager Deanna Fox (Lauren Ash) and cheerful, positive store manager Glenn Sturgis (Mark McKinney). Rounding out the core cast are the rest of Cloud 9’s cast, including Nicole Sakura’s gentle Cheyenne Lee, Colton Dana’s caustic Garrett McNeill, and Nico Santos as the gorgeous referee Mateo Fernando Aquino Livanaga, creating a diverse and unusually funny group of characters. That’s why the show had to be shut down despite what it was one of the best workplace comedies ever ever made.
America Ferrera left Superstore before Season 6, which may have contributed to the cancellation
America Ferrera, who was previously known for projects such as Ugly Betty and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before taking on Superstore, announced that she will be leaving the series in February 2020, just weeks after after exiting. the show was renewed for a sixth season. In a statement obtained by outlets like DeadlineFerrero, who also directed several episodes and produced the show, said: “The past five years at ‘Superstore’ have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career (…) Starting the next chapter for my family and career, I wish my beloved “Superstore” family all the best and continued success.
This all happened in February 2020 and we all know what happened the following month. The world more or less came to a complete halt for several weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing everyone into isolation long before a vaccine was available; Naturally, this affected the production of the Superstore. The show was filmed again in the fall of 2020 – using protective gear such as face masks, as their real “essential workers” did at a major store like Cloud 9 – but in December of that year Diversity announced that Season 6 would close the series entirely, with the finale eventually airing in February 2021. Did Ferrera’s departure decide the fate of the “Superstore”? This was probably also due to pandemic delays, but it certainly didn’t help that one of the show’s most famous performers left the project before COVID-19 became an issue.
What happens at the end of Superstore?
After all, America Ferrero — and by extension, Amy Sosa — returned at the very end of “Superstore,” including the “All Sales Finale” to wrap things up. Due to the uncertain future of the St. Louis Cloud 9 hanging over all the characters, they eventually decide to scatter and pursue new opportunities as the store prepares to become an online fulfillment center. While Dina chooses five employees to work in the fulfillment center, Glenn and Amy decide to move on, and while Garrett reflects on his ups and downs at Cloud 9, the audience is treated to a convenient montage of what happens to all the Superstore characters after events of the final.
Amy and Jonah, whose slow-burning romance was an important part of the seriesmarry and have a child together (with Jonah running for local political office and Amy continuing to work in corporate America in the process), as well as Dean and Garrett, whose love affair was significantly more strange, also gather; Glenn reopens his family’s hardware store, Sturgis & Sons, and hires Mateo, Cheyenne, and her wayward husband Bo (Johnny Pemberton) to work there with him. (Dina also still works at the fulfillment center with several colleagues). Also, it turns out that one of the weirdest employees at the store, a creeper named Elias, played by Danny Gura, has been leaving all these severed legs all over the place, so there’s that.
“Superstore” is now streaming on Hulu.
