Why Liverpool manager will miss Carabao Cup tie against Southampton

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will not be in the technical area when his side visit Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday (20:00 GMT).

The Reds can move a step closer to a first trophy under the Dutchman when they take on the bottom side of the Premier League.

Slot has guided his new club to the summit of the top flight after their first 15 league games, with a two-point cushion and a game in hand against second-placed Chelsea.

Here’s why the 46-year-old will serve out a spell at St Mary’s Stadium and what the former Feyenoord boss had to say about the situation.

When is Arne Slot suspended?

The Southampton game will be the only game Slot misses as part of a one-match ban following Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at home to Fulham.

He will be hoping for a return to the semi-finals, if the defending Carabao Cup champions face rivals who lost 5-0 at home to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

It means Slot will be on the sidelines again when Liverpool take on Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday (4.30pm).

The Carabao Cup tie will go straight to penalties if it ends in a draw, with extra time only used in the semi-finals and final.

Liverpool beat two Premier League sides to reach the quarter-finals, thrashing visitors West Ham 5-1 and beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2.

Why is Arne Slot suspended?

“There were a few moments where I could have been given a yellow card,” Slot said after being booked for his reaction to Curtis Jones’ booking for a 57th-minute challenge on Alex Iwobi at Anfield.

Liverpool lost left-back Andy Roberton to a straight red card in the 17th minute and twice came from behind to salvage a point.

“It’s an emotional game and we were a man down,” he added. “It’s frustrating. It’s good to see our performance after so many setbacks.”

Slot served a three-book suspension as he also saw yellow during his side’s 2-1 home win against Chelsea on October 20 and the 2-2 draw at Arsenal on October 27 October
