Who does Davy end up with in Netflix’s Never Have Ever?

There are teen shows pennies on Netflixbut few are as funny, charming, chaotic and emotionally grounded as “Never Have I Ever”. Created by Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling, the series follows the exploits of Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreya Ramakrishnan in her first role), a bold, self-confident Indian-origin teenager whose quest to kiss boys, get into a good college, and feel good again after the unexpected death of her father is thwarted. (“Heroes,” alum Sendhil Ramamurthy).

The show begins with the precocious, adventurous Devi who longs to lose her virginity and has her sights set on the most popular boy in school. Fortunately, however, the show didn’t bog down the territory of the gymnasium-tseliny tropand instead turns into a stunningly beautiful (and consistently wild) look at the complexities of teenage relationships, self-esteem, and more. Its final season is a masterstroke, and the series finale is way better than it has any right to be. Honestly, “Never Have I Ever” sometimes feels like Kaling’s “The Mindy Project” could have been if it had ended before it went off the rails. It’s a coming-of-age comedy, but it also has a lot of love for the rom-com genre, and it does a great job of happily ever after — even if, thanks to the resolution of its central love triangle, it’s sure to leave some shippers feeling scorned.

When Never Have I Ever began in 2020, his romantic angst was focused squarely on one big crush: Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the popular heartthrob whom Davy proposes to in the very first episode. Paxton, who played Roadhouse and Chicago Med actor Darren Barnettagrees despite Devi’s outcast status, and although the pair actually meet much later, the dream of connecting with the object of her affection drives Devi throughout the series.

Meanwhile, there’s Ben (Marks actor Jarren Lewison). Once Devi’s fierce academic rival, the geek with a secret weakness ends up developing feelings for his nemesis, and the pair’s relationship blossoms—and falls apart—in surprising ways throughout the series. At the end of season three, Devi brings Ben the “friends with benefits” pass he half-jokingly gave her and finally loses her virginity to him. Sex doesn’t solve everything, though, as she and Ben go through a lot of growing pains and spend most of Season 4 dating other people and focusing on their college plans.

Ben and Paxton are the series’ two main love interests, but Davie explores her sexuality, experiences early heartbreak, and figures out what she wants from relationships with several other guys. In Season 3, she meets Dez (9-1-1 actor Anirudh Pisharoda), whom she is surprised to find, despite the fact that he is the son of her mom’s close friend. When Des ghosts Devi, believing she still loves Paxton, she kisses a clumsy but musically inclined boy named Alejandro (Matias Salas Silva) to cheer her up, but they don’t meet and she and Des later to reconcile

Des and Devi eventually break up when she learns that his mother forced him to break up with her because she thinks Devi is “crazy”. It’s really sad, but the moment cements Devi’s relationship with her mom Nalini (Night star Poorna Jagannathan), who breaks up with Desa’s mom. Season 4 also sees Devi dating a bad boy named Ethan (Michael Cimino of Love Victor ), who she’s very hot and heavy with until it turns out he’s, well, too bad. She dumps him when he steals her Ivy League contact’s wallet.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who beat out thousands of other young actors for the role of Devi, was diplomatic about Team Paxton or Team Ben throughout the series, but finally she spilled on Variety when the show came to an end. “Yeah, I’m Team Devi, but now I can make a decision: I’m Team Paxton,” Ramakrishnan revealed, explaining that she thinks the pair oppose each other in interesting ways and still end up together. “It may be on the table later. Hear me out,” she told the outlet, noting that the pair “have that undeniable chemistry where they push each other in different ways.”

Lewison, meanwhile, is (as expected) Ben’s crew. “Of course I’m biased. I’ll always be Ben’s team,” he told Variety in the same interview, admitting that Ramakrishnan had made great points for Paxton’s team. U GQ interviewhe said he liked the enemies-as-lovers trope that Never Have I Ever used so skillfully when it came to Davy and Ben. “If you look back at this series, Ben and Davy always had this magnetism,” he reflected. “They always found each other in times of strife and great triumph. And I don’t know if that makes them soul mates, but I think that says something.”

Barnett, meanwhile, said Tudum that he gave Team Paxton an advantage, but that Davy’s happiness mattered most. “I never want the message of the show to be that you need someone to make you happy,” he explained. “So I think part of the journey of the show is Devi finding happiness within herself.”

Devi does find that happiness, and the show’s final episode does a great job of focusing on all the important points in her story — from her family life to her friendships and academic future to her grief over the loss of her father — before tying things up with a romantic epilogue. After several seasons of sad looks, awkward encounters, and messy lost connections, Davy and Ben finally make up when he returns from his internship in New York to tell Davy how he feels about her before she leaves for Princeton.

The pair ended up sleeping together that night, making up for their less-than-stellar first time earlier in the season. They also decide to date, although the series makes it pretty clear that love and dating don’t have to be as serious as Devi expected when she was young, so there’s no telling if they’ll end up together. forever. Instead, we’ll see them in a few months, watching a movie together in Devi’s dorm. The entire episode is sweet and surprisingly swoon-worthy, proving once again that Never Was I is not just a teen comedy, but one of the best rom-coms on TV in years.

Even though Davy doesn’t end up with Paxton, he still finds plenty of happiness—and remains friends with the amazing girl who changed his life when she inexplicably asked him to have sex with her a few years ago. In Season 4, Paxton struggles to find his place at Arizona State University, and one of the most realistic and relatable storylines shows how he goes from the super popular kid in high school to someone who doesn’t immediately charm his classmates and college teachers.

Paxton drops out of college and ends up working as an assistant swim coach at his old high school, where he rekindles his relationship with Davie and the pair share one last kiss and heart-to-heart. By the end of the series, he’s struck up a new relationship with substitute teacher Lindsay (Gennea Walton, “Black AF”) and decided to return to ASU. However, this time around, he continues to teach – a nice full-on moment for a character who used to struggle with academics himself.
