The Squid Game Season 2 spoilers follow.

It’s been three years, but the show that took the world by storm in 2021 is over Netflix’s biggest series launch ever is back with a new game that is likely to be just as deadly and treacherous as its predecessor. One of top things to remember from The Squid Game Season 1 in that Song Gi-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) was the sole surviving player of the brutal battle royale, who became 45.6 billion won richer and with a full head of dyed red hair. So where does season 2 begin? How long has it been since our hero announced hunting season for the masters of the game who are still picking members of the public out of pocket and giving them the fight of a lifetime? Well, as revealed in the first episode, it’s not very long. In fact, it’s like we’re almost out of games.

Starting with the first episode, we meet Gi-hoon again right where Season 1 left off: Gi-hoon, his hair still red, is still talking to the mysterious Front when he realizes that he has a tracker that was implanted behind his ear , which he instantly cuts out. From there, the story jumps forward a full two years, highlighting what appears to be a long standoff between our hero and the masked villains.

Time is not on the side of our heroes in Squid Game

In a world where every second counts and choosing the right sugar cookie can be a matter of life and death, the fact that The Squidward Game is set two years ahead of the events of last season’s finale should be alarming. While he may have been lucky to make it out alive, Gi-hoon has been unsuccessful in tracking down the game masters behind his incredible experience, even with the help of a team he pays to monitor the subway in search of the mysterious recruiter who lured him into the nightmare to begin with.

But in all this time of strikes, what have the evil people behind the games been up to? How much have they followed our hero, and more importantly, how much have they infiltrated his life after victory? It’s all well and good to pay a team to hunt, but who’s to say those he hires don’t already have another employer? Any impasse in the search for masters of the game can be a setup from the inside. He needs someone he can trust. Someone who has a reason to go back over the fence and into the eyes of this giddy doll. Unfortunately, this man is busy in a boat with a fisherman to keep him company.

Joon Ho’s wounds have yet to heal from the Squid Game

Determined police officer Jun Ho (Wee Ha Jun) is back on the case even after the misstep of being shot and nearly killed last season. Now reassigned as a traffic cop after his failed attempt to reveal the games to the world, he has spent the past two years trying to find an island that has miraculously disappeared. Seemingly every day, Joon Ho goes swimming with the fisherman, Captain Park, who pulled Joon Ho from the sea after he was shot last season.

Day after day, Joon Ho and Captain Park sail around trying to find the island, but with absolutely no success. Of course, two years is a long time for a sneaky company to cover their tracks, chief among which is Joon-ho’s own brother, Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hoon), a.k.a. The Main Man, who continues the legacy left behind by Oh Il- Nam (Oh Young Soo). The last time they met, Joon Ho’s older brother shot him and nearly sent him to his death to keep his new profession, so there’s no telling what lengths he’s willing to go to to keep it that way. At this point, the only sensible game plan is to eat the entire series and make sure no one takes the umbrella this time.

The Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
