What we know about the survivors of the New Orleans terrorist attack

Terrorist Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s truck attack in New Orleans earlier this week killed 14 innocent revelers and injured more than 30 others, many of whom had their lives changed forever.

The youngest of the dead was 18, and the oldest was 63 years old. Most of those killed were in their 20s and came from states such as Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York and New Jersey, and the United Kingdom.

Of the more than 30 people injured, 16 are in hospital and half are in intensive care units on Friday.

Dr. New Orleans University Medical Center. Jeffrey Elder told CNN that most of the patients at the hospital were being treated for “blunt trauma,” while several patients were suffering from gunshot wounds.

Here’s what we know about the survivors.

Jeremy SenskyA 51-year-old woman from Pennsylvania told NBC News that she was in a wheelchair when she was hit.

Sensky said he has been paralyzed since 1999 and “his wheelchair was completely battered” by the scattered pieces.

He said that both his legs were broken, but he was lucky to be alive. He remembered lying on the floor, seeing parts of a wheelchair next to him.

Alabama resident Alexis Scott-Windham was shot in the leg and has multiple fractures, NOLA.com reports.

As he lay bleeding on Bourbon Street, his friends called his mother for help, who told them to apply a tourniquet to control the flow of blood, NBC News reported.

He told WSAZ what happened and said he was also hit by a speeding truck.

“Next thing you know, we hear a lot of screaming and we hear a noise, pop, pop, pop. And the next thing you know, I’m looking to the left really fast. I see a car coming toward me. Its lights are going off,” he said.

“As he got closer, I went, ‘No, it can’t be a drunk driver because he would have caused an accident right now.’ He was honestly going about 70 mph, trying to hit as many people as possible.

Street camera video from the morning of the attack shows a group of officers stationed near Bourbon Street immediately running toward danger when a call came in about a suspicious vehicle incident.

Eight victims are still in the intensive care unit at University Medical Center (UMC), NOLA.com reports.

The elder said those who sought medical attention at UMC suffered injuries ranging from severe head injuries and lacerated spleens to bullet wounds and multiple broken bones.

Before his rampage in New Orleans, Jabbar posted several videos of his support on Facebook For the Islamic State (ISIS).The FBI said.

Of the 14 victims who died in the attack, 13 have been identified: Nikyra Dedeaux, 18; Hubert Gautreaux, 21; Kareem Bilal Badawi, 23; Billy DiMaio, 25; Matthew Tenedorio, 25; Drew Dauphin, 26; Martin “Tiger” Bech, 27; Nicole Perez, 28; Edward Pettyfer, 31; Reggie Hunter, 37; Elliot Wilkinson, 40; Brandon Taylor, 43; and Terrence Kennedy, 63.

A New Orleans law firm representing one of the survivors of the New Year’s Day terror attack said it has filed a lawsuit against the City of New Orleans and the United States. New Orleans Police Department for failing to establish “basic security measures” before the attack.

Maples & Connick, LLC, said the city’s “negligence led to Wednesday’s tragic events,” which were “both foreseeable and preventable.” The firm said it will file a lawsuit on January 8.

The lawsuit could be the first of many filed by survivors and victims’ families.
