Beware, reader! There is spoilers ahead for the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows, blah blah blah!

Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fargo, and M*A*S*X, What We Do in the Shadows didn’t take long to justify its existence, step out of the shadow of its cinematic counterpart, and transform into one of the best comedies on television. Over the course of six seasons, the series followed the misadventures of a group of horned vampires and buffoons who long ago abandoned their mission to conquer the new world and simply lead the static life of creepy, as well as their acquaintance Guillermo’s (Harvey Gillen) quest to become a vampire. even though it has Van Helsing’s blood in it. In season 5, even Guillermo finally turned into a creature of the night, only to realize it wasn’t for him and turn back into a human.

This last part is important because Guillermo’s Vampire Season 5 Storyline (Read Our Review) definitely felt like the best place to end the show thematically. Where do you go when you go beyond the main purpose of one character in the cast who really needs something to achieve in life? Well, the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows has an obvious answer that I honestly had completely forgotten about, the end of a documentary that has been filming vampires for years.

The series finale of What We Do in the Shadows not only sets up a poignant episode, but also serves as a meta-commentary to the end of the series, as Guillermo has a bit of a crisis after learning that the documentary is coming to an end and tries his best to keep the cameras rolling for as long as possible. . Because, as he notes, there is no proper conclusion to their story yet. The heroes of the series have not learned anything, let alone achieved anything worthy of a conclusion. The episode itself reinforces the idea that yes, these are vampires with immortal lifespans, so there’s no reason for them to ever change or do anything major, which would serve as a good stopping point.

Realizing that it’s impossible to create a perfect ending, our favorite vampire girl Nadia (Natasia Demetriou) has a fantastic idea. The result? What We Do in the Shadows wraps up 1985’s Clue and offers viewers alternate endings to choose from.

What We Do in the Shadows parodies famous cliffhangers

It all starts with our resident energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) pondering the the challenges of creating a satisfying series finale. And only then, Nadia comes up with the idea to hypnotize the viewers of the documentary, to make them watch the ending that will satisfy them the most. As it turns out, vampires and documentary film crews are actually capable of accomplishing this as well, providing multiple (and randomly chosen) endings.

One of these finales takes the form of a direct parody of the infamous Newhart finale, when ex-host Guillermo Nandor (Kaivan Novak) plays Dick Loudan to Guillermo’s Emily Hartley and wakes up in the bed next door, revealing that he’s been dreaming the entire play. There’s also an ending that parodies the big twist from The Usual Suspects, and an ending that pokes fun at the conclusion of Rosemary’s Baby. You can actually find them all on Hulu by clicking on the “Hypnosis Extras” tab next to the What We Do in the Shadows finale.

It’s all absolutely brilliant. Season 6 alone already gave us perfect parodies of both Apocalypse Now and Warriors , so the finale needs to include not one, but three more parodies of famous endings are impressive and hilarious. But it’s not just that parody endings are funny, or that the very idea of having multiple endings works as a fantastic joke about not being able to please everyone. Moreover, the rest of the episode also has multiple endings to help satisfy different audiences.

In addition to the hypnosis, there is also a beautiful scene where Guillermo says goodbye to Nandar and decides to leave for good. Except that’s not a real conclusion, because the episode cuts to another scene where Guillermo returns, admitting that he was just posing for the cameras to give the documentary crew a nice ending. He then goes on to have another bonding moment with Nandor before the vampire pulls a lever in his coffin and the pair descend an elevator shaft into Nandor’s secret superhero lair, where Nandor becomes Batman. Basically, no matter what aspect of the show you enjoyed the most, there’s something for you in the What We Do in the Shadows finale.

“What We Do in the Shadows” is now streaming in its entirety on Hulu.
