Day 3 of the Frontera-Gavaskar Trophy third Test at the Gabba saw another early exit for the star India batsman Virat Kohli, adding to the away team’s woes. Kohli, known for his stamina and skill, edged a delivery outside off stump to be caught by Alex Carey off Josh Hazlewood, marking another low score in the series against Australia.

Virat Kohli goes cheap

The dismissal came on the second ball of the eighth over, when Hazlewood bowled a full toss outside off stump, tempting Kohli to a drive. The ball drifted away just to catch the outside edge of Kohli’s bat, sending him back to the pavilion for just 3 runs off 16 deliveries. This outing has fueled discussions about Kohli’s form, especially his struggles against the Australian pace attack in this series.

Hazlewood, celebrating his ninth dismissal of Kohli in Test cricket, looked elated, acknowledging the importance of removing one of the greats of the game. This moment was crucial as India, already under pressure, were reduced to 22/3. The Indian batting line-up has come under scrutiny, with fans and analysts pointing to the need for a stronger strategy against the Australian bowlers.

Solid start for Australia after ending their first innings on 445

Australia, after posting a formidable 445 in their first innings thanks to centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith, put India under immense pressure. Wicketkeeper batsman Alex Carey also contributed a valuable 70 runs to the teams total.

With the ball, left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc struck first for India before Hazlewood intervened. Starc sent first Yashasvi Jaiswal packing for a 4 off two balls and then dismissed Shubman Gill 1 (3).

The match is important not only for the ongoing series but also for India’s aspirations in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). With the weather playing a role, offering intermittent rain breaks, the contest at the Gabba has been anything but straightforward. However, with Kohli’s quick exit, India’s hopes of a substantial reply have dimmed, putting more onus on the remaining batsmen to save the innings.
