Sony’s CES 2025 keynote will begin soon, and you can watch it and follow our live coverage right here. Afeela electric vehicle dominates Sony’s 2023 press conferences and 2024 at CES, and it looks like that trend will continue this year, with an appearance at Sony’s event (and subsequent press conference) it has already been confirmed. This represents a change for Sony, the main company of CES, as it is better known for its decades in the consumer electronics space with its Walkman portables and old Trinitron TVs along with next-generation PlayStation consoles and Alpha cameras.

Afeela is the first product from Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between the Japanese electronics and transportation giants. After a surprise presentation at CES 2023the Sony CES representative revealed further details about the EV’s LiDAR sensor array and AI-enhanced in-cabin technology (the latter coming with the help of Microsoft) at CES 2024. If the previously announced car planning points – pre-orders in 2025. before availability in 2026. – remain intact, we hope to hear which of the Afeela concept car’s intricacies will actually make the cut once they hit real-world streets.

Of course, it won’t just be Afeela all the time in Vegas. Expect Sony to spend time talking about its imaging division, its gaming division, or maybe even its movie studio. And with any luck, we’ll get more information about the company XR handsetwhich was shown at the 2024 expo, only to never be seen again. CES 2025 will be the perfect place to show off a rich update to a possible Apple Vision Pro competitor.

You can watch the Sony CES press conference as it happens below. The broadcast will begin on Monday, January 6 at 8:00 PM ET.

  • Preview of Gemini in Google Home products

In case you missed it, Google also shared how it plans to integrate Gemini AI into its smart home platform, which includes devices like Nest Audio, Nest Hub, and Nest Cameras. Specifically, Gemini will be woven into the Assistant for these devices so that talking to the digital assistant feels more natural. Our reporter Amy Schoerheim got a preview of what this will look like at Google’s booth today, and here’s her quick takeaway:

“Probably the most impressive trick I saw was the case of the missing cookies. The representative asked the Nest Hub the question, “Hey Google, what happened to the cookies on the counter?” Pulling footage from a connected Nest Cam, the Hub showed a dog walking into the kitchen, flicking a cookie and running away, narrating the context of the video, saying, “ A dog jumped on the counter and. looked at the cookies on December 12 at 1:29 pm.” Of course this was a pre-recorded clip as unfortunately there was no dog in the demo kitchen.”

Stern Pinball has been a mainstay at CES for years, as well as numerous other industry conventions, bringing a new themed machine every year. For CES 2025, the Engadget team was shocked to learn that the company’s offering was a loving tribute to Dungeons and Dragons to celebrate the franchise’s 50th birthday. This machine focuses specifically on Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant’s Eye, and Nathan Ingraham explains what caught his eye:

“The thing that caught my eye was the fact that you can pick a character and level them up over time, provided you use Stern’s Insider Connected app. This app already allows you to create a profile and track achievements, games in your area, your high scores and other features (you “log in” by scanning a QR code from the app, but with Dungeons & Dragons you can actually improve your character over time and save your progress through the game’s many modes). When you first start, you choose a character and a location, and those choices will affect the objectives you have to complete. Stern specifically says that its new “PinSave” system will allow you to save character experience points, inventory items, and game campaign progress in multiples. games.”

  • Roborock’s latest robot vacuum cleaner can pick up your dirty socks

We were already intrigued by the description of Roborock’s CES 2025 offering, but watching the video Carissa Bell shot really adds to the experience. The Robovac Saros Z70 has a built-in arm that unfolds and picks up items from your floor and can even put them away. Will this save family relationships and make people happy? Based on what Carissa saw, the robot arm at least seems to work, so you’ll just have to work on the communication.

    Carissa adds:

“Before you can use it, you’ll need to activate the arm through the Roborock app, where you can also set what objects it can interact with and where they should be placed. While it’s not quite Rosie the Robot, the Saros Z70 has the potential to make tidying up a whole lot easier. And it’s not just a prototype — Roborock plans to make it available for purchase this year.”

  • will.i.am continues to haunt CES

It wouldn’t be CES without celebrity-endorsed launches, and those of us who have been covering this event for a while are all too familiar with will.i.am’s efforts to develop a successful tech product. Who can forget the PULS bracelet, which started as a smartwatch and the wearable fever is just taking off? Anyway, will.i.am continues to make his presence known here at the conference, but this time through a collaboration with LG. In fact, just before the start of CES 2025, the company appointed the musician as its “Experiential Architect”, working together on the xboom line of audio products.

This week, Billy Steele got to check out the LG xboom in person, which includes three speakers. Grab is the smallest of them and here’s what Billy thinks:

“I was pleasantly surprised by how much bass the xboom Grab picked up during my demo, with punchy highs and solid mids retaining detail. That low end sounded a little muffled to me, but I only listened to it quickly, so a full review would confirm that this is indeed the case, that’s how loud the xboom Grab can be, producing an almost uncomfortable level of sound for the room.”

  • By the way, there were things we saw at CES Unveiled last night that we might have wanted to try but avoided due to hygiene and personal comfort reasons. For example, a crowd of people crowded around the booth of a company called Kirin with a product called Salt Spoon, which was supposed to use electricity to deliver the umami taste. There were disposable versions of their spoon ready for people to use, and although I waited in line several times to try it, I never got around to trying it. Based on what I heard from various people at the booth, however, the salty taste seemed to come through. I plan to hunt down Kirin this week to make time for a salty spoon.

  • While CES was raging, there was some interesting news happening outside of Las Vegas as well. For example, Apple has announced that it plans to release an update “in the coming weeks,” which will make it clearer that the notification summaries are generated by AI. In the event of future incidents where Apple Intelligence misrepresented a signal from an app to a news organization, for example, people would be able to more easily see that it was Apple Intelligence (as opposed to, say, the BBC) who creates the sentences in these summaries.

  • Now that Samsung is done, next up on our list of notable press conferences today is Sony, which takes place at 5:00 PM PT (aka about 2 hours from now, if I’m doing my math correctly). Of course, there are other event companies in between, like Zeekr. CES is a great place to learn about companies you may not have heard of before.

  • Settings will sync with the new devices, including your Bixby preferences. Voice guides will be available for visually impaired customers on touchscreen devices later this year.

  • Corporate Sustainability Center Vice President Inhee Chung is now on the scene. Accessibility is the next topic on the agenda.
