In the 7th game of the Big Bash League 2024-25at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, the Hobart Hurricanes assumed the Perth Scorcherswith fans witnessing a sensational one-handed catch by the Hobart wicket-keeper batsman, Ben McDermott. The stunning catch came off the bowling of Riley Meredithruling out Perth’s opening, Find Allenin a dramatic turn of events.

Ben McDermott’s remarkable one-handed catch

The match got off to a fiery start from Perth Scorchers opener Allen who opened the innings with a boundary off the first ball. Meredith bowled a backhand pitch that wobbled wide, and Allen expertly hit it to the left of mid-on, sending the ball racing towards the boundary. The crowd roared as Allen got off to a strong start but the next delivery turned the tide in Hobart’s favour.

Meredith’s next ball to Allen was a length delivery that was clipped after pitch, catching the inside edge of Allen’s bat. The ball deflected off his body, and in a split second, McDermott, positioned behind the stumps, lunged superbly to his left to take a one-handed catch. Allen was dismissed for 4 runs off just 2 balls.

Riley Meredith’s brilliant performance with the ball

Meredith was the standout performer for the Hobart Hurricanes in the first innings. The right-arm fast bowler’s outstanding spell of 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs played a pivotal role in keeping the Scorchers’ batting in check. After Allen’s first move, Meredith sacked two more key Perth players. First, he got rid of it Cooper Connollywho was caught back by McDermott, and then dismissed the Perth captain, Ashton Turnerin a crucial breakthrough. Meredith’s accuracy and ability to strike at crucial times ensured that the Scorchers could not build any meaningful partnership. Her remarkable performance didn’t stop there, Meredith also displayed brilliant fielding, executing a direct strike to run out the keeper’s batsman.
