US President Donald Trump has taken office
“We’re going to expand,” Trump said. Um, where?
Trump’s inauguration speech included three unusual words — in the middle of a long sentence deep enough that they risked being overlooked.
Trump talked about the expansion of the US territory, this did not happen in generations. He included “expand our territory” in a list of things he wanted to do.
That’s clearly remarkable given Trump’s recent musings: making Canada a nation, annexing Greenland, and taking back the Panama Canal.
But it was uncertain. He was just talking about retaking the Panama Canal, and then he was talking about planting an American flag on Mars.
On his to-do list: “The United States will once again consider itself a growing nation—increasing our wealth, expanding our territory, building our cities, raising our expectations, and carrying our flag to new and beautiful horizons. And we will continue our manifest destiny in the stars – launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on Mars. Ambition is the lifeblood of a great nation, and at present our nation is more ambitious than others.”
To be clear, Trump made no reference to Canada or Greenland in his speech. The idea of annexing any of these places is not very popular with Americans. request published by the Wall Street Journal a few days ago.
