  • U.S. stocks rose on the first trading day of the new year as optimism about future corporate growth was dampened somewhat by concerns about the technology sector.

  • Uber Technologies and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have been added to Goldman Sachs’ list of US convicts.

  • Apple has cut its iPhone prices in China as competition heats up in the mobile phone market there.

US stocks started 2025 trading higher as positive analyst comments were somewhat offset by technology concerns Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up big early gains to trade up 0.2%, while S&P 500: and: Nasdaq: were higher by 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively.

Shares of Uber Technologies (UBER:) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH:) advanced when Goldman Sachs added both to its US judgment list, arguing that both have promising growth potential ahead.

Shares of Unity Software (U:) left after Roaring Kitty posted a video on X of the late singer Rick James’ cover of the song “Unity,” which some saw as a sign stock of memes the hero was promoting the stock.

Newmont shares (NO) and gold miners’ rivals rose as the precious metal started the year up 1%, following a record high in 2024.

Tesla (TSLA:) was the S&P 500’s worst performer after the electric vehicle (EV) maker posted disappointing fourth-quarter shipment numbers.

Shares of Neumora Therapeutics (NMRA:) fell to an all-time low when the biopharmaceutical company’s experimental depression drug failed to meet goals in a Phase 3 trial.

Apple (AAPL:) shares fell as the tech giant slashed its iPhone prices in China as it faced growing competition.

Oil futures have increased in price. 10-year Treasury yields were little changed. The US dollar rose against the euro, pound and yen. Most major cryptocurrencies were trading higher.
