U-Haul finds South Carolina, Texas and Florida among popular states to move to

A recent study found that the picturesque state in the southeast has become the most popular place to move to in 2024. according to U-Haul.

The moving and storage company recently published its U-Haul Growth Index, which measures how many customers use a one-way U-Haul each year.South Carolina, the 2024 winner, knocked off Texas, which had topped the list for the past few years.

“Growth ratings are constructed based on each state’s net gain (or loss) using U-Haul equipment in a calendar year,” the study explains of deals on one-way U-Haul trucks, trailers and U-Box® moving containers.”

While Texas still ranks high, U-Haul noted that the Palmetto State actually dethroned Texas from its top spot last year.

“Texas has ranked first or second in U-Haul Growth every year since 2016,” the company said. “Florida has been fourth or higher every year since 2015.”

“In 2024, more than 51.7% of all U-Haul vehicles in and out of the Palmetto State were arrivals,” the company added.

In a statement, U-Haul International President Jay Taylor said the 2024 state-to-state deals “reaffirm customer trends that have been evident for some time.”

“Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families weigh the cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that lead them to move to a new state,” Taylor said for a variety of markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast, and especially in California.”

“U-Haul continues to expand its network, rental fleet and self-storage space so that wherever people move in 2025, we’ll be there to meet their needs,” he added.

The increase in migration to southern states is not surprising given other recent studies by the National Association of Realtors last year 2024 Migration Trends Report It also found that the southern states were the most popular areas to move to.
