President-elect Donald Trump is giving Republicans their blessing to negotiate a major tax that could be critical to the GOP’s talks to overhaul massive conservative politics next year.

He met with Trump several different groups In Mar-a-Lago over the weekend, House Republicans, including the blue-state GOP lawmakers who make up the House SALT Caucus — an existing $10,000 bill for state and local tax (SALT) deductions that primarily affect urban and suburban residents. group in areas with high income and property taxes such as New York, New Jersey and California.

“I think it was productive and successful,” Nicole Malliotakis, representative of RN.Y., said about the meeting. “The president supports our efforts to increase SALT appropriations. He understands that mayors and governors in blue states are crushing taxpayers and wants relief from the federal level.”

But Trump indicated at the House GOP conference that he was aware of opposition from others, particularly rural Republicans who view the SALT deductions as tax breaks for the wealthy. Before the cap was implemented in 2017, there were no limits on how much state income and local property taxes people could deduct from their income when they filed their federal returns.

“He gave us a little bit of homework to work on, a number that could free our middle-class voters from the high taxes imposed by our governor and mayor, and at the same time, something that could build consensus and come to an agreement. (218 majority),” Malliotakis said. .

“I think we know very well that this is not going to be a complete repeal of the SALT ban. There is no appetite in Congress or even among American taxpayers to cut taxes for the super-rich.

“Our efforts are really focused on middle-class families, and that’s where we’re focusing to get the right balance.”

Trump suggested he would change course during his second administration last September when he wrote on Truth Social that he would “repeal SALT, cut your taxes and do more.”

The debate is part of Republicans’ broader talks to overhaul massive funding and conservative policies through a process known as “reconciliation.”

By reducing the Senate’s threshold for passage to a simple majority instead of two-thirds, the process allows both houses of Congress and the party in control of the White House to pass certain laws, provided they deal with budget and other financial matters.

Rep. Mike Lawler, RN.Y. Some pro-SALT Republicans, such as

“The only red line I have is if there’s a tax bill that doesn’t lift the cap on SALT, I’m not going to support it,” Lawler said in an interview with Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

Lawler also said he agreed with Trump that the SALT deduction should be increased.

House Republicans have virtually no room for error with razor-thin majorities between Trump’s inauguration and April.

“He understands how unfair this is and how it will affect the city’s economy and the people we represent, and that’s why we’re currently working with him on legal options to remove the Biden administration’s rubber stamp,” Malliotakis said. “If there is a legal option, if there is a legal option to stop congestion pricing, it will.”

“You know, there are cops, cops, firefighters, nurses, restaurant workers who have to go at odd hours, and they drive because they don’t feel like the transit system is clean or safe.”

Congestion pricing went into effect in New York earlier this month.
