WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump has been invited to address a joint session of Congress on March 4, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Saturday.

“It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite President Donald Trump on Tuesday, 2025. Convener’s letter to address a joint session of Congress on March 4 to share our AMERICA FREE vision. It was also issued by his office.

It will be Trump’s first such address since he took office on Jan. 20. Trump’s Republican Party holds a narrow majority in the House and is more comfortable in the Senate.

Trump is pushing a plan to use revenue from higher tariffs on imports to help pay for an extension of trillions of dollars in tax cuts.

He threatened the entire council with import tariffs, but has yet to impose any.

Lawmakers and analysts have said such a push is likely to face opposition from many Republicans in Congress, especially budget hawks concerned with the reliability and durability of tariff revenue, along with the fact that trade wars are crossing over to individual constituencies and constituents.

The president and his allies say he wants to use them much like the personal and corporate taxes that account for the vast majority of U.S. revenue, not tariffs, to pay for government programs and sweeping tax cuts.
