the president Donald Trump threatened to impose “high-level” sanctions on Wednesday Russia and tariffs on imports from the country unless the country reaches an agreement to end its nearly three-year term war against Ukraine.
The name of Russian President Vladimir Putin was mentioned in Trump’s warning on the third day of his presidency.
“If we don’t make a ‘deal’ and soon, I will have no choice but to impose high levels of Taxes, Tariffs and Sanctions on everything Russia sells to the US and other participating countries.” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Let’s end this war that would never have started if I were president! We can do it the easy way or the hard way – and the easy way is always better,” Trump wrote.
It’s time to “FIGHT”. NO MORE LIVES TO BE LOST!!!
Trump has repeatedly said he could end the war in Ukraine in a day if elected to a second, non-consecutive term in the White House. The war began in February 2022 with the invasion of Russia.
He said in May 2023: “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’m going to do it – I’m going to do it within 24 hours.”
That didn’t happen until after his inauguration on Monday.
But Trump’s message to Russia on Wednesday revealed his intention to deploy economic weapons against Russia, as he has threatened to do against US allies such as Mexico and Canada if those nations do not bend to his will.
“I’m not going to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people and I’ve always had a very good relationship with President Putin — and that’s despite the Radical Left’s Russia, Russia, Russia hoaxes,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We must never forget that Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60 million lives in the process.”
“All that being said, I’m going to do a HUGE FAVOR to Russia’s collapsing economy and President Putin. Make up your mind now and stop this ridiculous war!” Trump wrote.
“IT’S ONLY GOING TO BE BAD.”
Trump’s claim about Russian losses in World War II is much higher than experts estimate.
National WWII Museum New Orleans said the total number of military and civilian casualties during the war in the Soviet Union was 24 million.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in December that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the fighting, and 370,000 others were wounded.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine estimates that 198,000 Russian soldiers were killed and more than 550,000 were wounded.
