While performing “Achy Breaky Heart” at President Donald Trump’s Inaugural Freedom Ball, Billy Ray Cyrus encountered a number of technical problems, including problems with his guitar and microphone that forced the country singer to improvise, eventually leading him to perform the song a cappella. At one point, he took the mic off the stand and started mouthing the lyrics rather than singing them, showing his determination to push himself forward.

“Check? Is anyone awake?” Billy Ray taunted the audience during his performance. “Do you want me to sing more or do you want me to just leave the stage?” he continued, adding a humorous nod to the event’s host: “In life, when you have technical difficulties, you just have to keep going, or as President Trump would say, ‘You have to fight.'”

“I would not pass up the honor of performing at this event whether my microphone, guitar or monitors are working or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me,” he said. “I had a ball last night at the Liberty Ball, and what I’ve learned over the years is when a producer says, ‘You’re in,’ you’re going to entertain people, even if the equipment is going to hell. I was around people and we had fun. It’s called rock and roll!’
