The Football Association of England has rejected Tottenham’s appeal to have Rodrigo Bentancur’s ban reduced for racist comments.
Tottenham Hotspur have lost an appeal against the severity of Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game ban for using offensive language about South Koreans over comments he made about Spurs team-mate Son Heung-min.
The Football Association reported on this on Tuesday Spurs appeal The hearing and grounds for sanction were dismissed soon after the reasons for the decision were published.
There is Bentancourt already suspended for five domestic gamesand will miss Thursday’s League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United and Sunday’s visit of Liverpool in the Premier League.
Appearing on a Uruguay TV show in June, Bentancourt was asked for the Tottenham player’s shirt and asked, “Sonny’s?” He added that it might as well be his Son’s cousin, because “more or less they are all the same.”
Bentancourt later apologized to Son on Instagram, saying it was a “very bad joke” and that he would “never disrespect you or hurt you”. The son accepted the apology.
Details of the decision released by the independent commission showed that Bentancourt explained his comments as a “sarcastic and gentle rebuke” for the journalist calling his teammate “Korean” and objected to the reporter’s description of Son.
In its findings, the regulatory commission wrote, however, that “even on the player’s evidence and submissions, we find that the player’s words, when used in the full context in which they were used, are clearly abusive and insulting and amount to a breach of the law.”
The commission added that it also took into account that Bentancur did not intend to hurt Son or anyone else.
Bentancourt was also fined $126,000 by the commission.
