Tim Tszyu Reflects on 2024 Losses, Aims for Greatness in 2025

Tim Tszyu posted on Instagram today, telling his 283,000 followers that 2025 is the year “We all grow old.” Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) admits 2024 wasn’t great for him, losing his title and winning it twice in a row.

First, he was defeated by Sebastian Fundora in a 12-round split decision on March 30. Then on October 19 in Orlando, Florida, he was knocked out in the third round in an unsuccessful world title challenge against the undefeated IBF 154-pound champion. Bakhram Murtazaliev.

Tszyu’s loss to Murtazaliev was brutal and signaled that he needed to rebuild his career by fighting domestic-level opposition in his native Australia.

Back to basics

It would be foolhardy for Tim to continue fighting the top five level fighters at 154, because a third loss ruins him beyond the point of return. Mentally, it would be tough, but fans would completely give up on Tszyu if he loses his next contest.

In retrospect, it was a mistake for Tszyu to challenge Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) in his first fight back from a loss to Fundora. He should have taken a softer opponent instead of this guy, who is one of the hardest punchers in the division.

Murtazaliev’s power and offensive skills could be too much for Terence Crawford, Fundora and Israil Madrimov. Tszyu should have known better to trade power punches with this guy.

“2024 a year of adversity. I considered myself a throwback fighter, I didn’t care who was in front of me, I was ready to take on anyone. Things don’t always go according to plan, but that’s the best thing about boxing. What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger. We thank everyone for the support. Sorry to let a lot down… I like to hit with the best. And that is exactly what I will continue to do. And that’s hitting whoever it is. I hope everyone has a happy and prosperous New Year.
2025 is the year we all grow up. In what we do Pursue greatness and never stop believing!! See you very soon,” said Tim Tszyu Instagram.
