Thieves use explosives to steal gold ‘masterpieces’ from Dutch museum
Harry Tupan, director of the Drents Museum, said staff were “very shaken” by the theft, which he said was the biggest in its 170-year history.
Police were called to the scene after reports of an explosion at 03:45 local time (04:45 GMT) on Saturday.
Officers conducted forensics and reviewed CCTV footage throughout the day.
Police are also investigating a burnt-out car found on a nearby road, which they suspect may be connected to the theft.
“A possible scenario is that the suspects moved to another vehicle near the fire,” Dutch police said in a statement.
No arrests have been made, but authorities suspect multiple people were involved. Police have asked the global police agency Interpol to help with the investigation.
