These five auto recalls affected the largest number of vehicles in 2024

Automakers have recalled millions of vehicles through 2024 to address a variety of issues, usually related to driver and passenger safety.

There have been five recalls this year with the largest populations of vehicles potentially affected four different car manufacturersTesla, Ford, Honda and FCA US, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Tesla recalled more than 2.19 million vehicles

In late January, Tesla issued a recall 2.19 million vehicles because the font of the brake, parking and antilock brake system warning lights displayed on their instrument panel was smaller than required by federal safety standards.

The electric car maker, led by billionaire Elon Musk, has released a software update for the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X and 2019-2024 Model Y vehicles to increase and resolve the problem, according to NHTSA. The upgrade was free.

At the time, Tesla said it was “not aware of any accidents, injuries or deaths that may be related” to the problem.

Ford recalled about 1.89 million vehicles

In January, Ford recalled nearly 1.89 million of its 2011-2019 Explorer SUVs because of a potential problem with the A-pillar trim that borders the “right and left sides of the glass,” according to the recall report. :

The trims on the recalled SUVs “may detach from the vehicle,” the automaker said at the time.It attributed the potential problem to the shear retaining clips, which it said “may not have been involved due to improper assembly or repair.”

An estimated 5% of the recall population is affected, according to the report the company is recalling the SUVs, the problem is said to have not resulted in any crashes or injuries.

The fix involved taking the recalled Explorers to the dealer and replacing the A-pillar exterior trim as needed.

The July recall of approximately 1.85 million Model 3, Model S and Model X 2021-2024 and Model Y 2020-2024 vehicles involved software that could may not be detected unlocked hood, according to NHTSA.

“Unknowingly driving with the hood unlocked can cause the hood to fully open and obstruct the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall report said at the time.

Tesla said it released an over-the-air software update that “detects an open hood and provides a customer interface notification of an open hood condition” starting in mid-June. It doesn’t require a dealer visit.

There have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.

Honda is recalling about 1.69 million vehicles

In October, Honda announced 2022-2025 Honda Civic Sedan, 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan, 2022-2025 Honda Civic Hatchback, 2023-2025 Honda Civic 33-2025 Honda Civic Type R20V0, 2023-2025 Honda CR -V Hybrid, 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell, 2023-2025 Honda HR-V, 2023-2025 Acura Integra and 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S vehicles that potentially had an “improper wheelbase.” It included about 1.69 million vehicles.

The worm wheel and worm gear on the recalled vehicles could potentially have “rising friction,” which could make steering harder and require more steering effort. the car manufacturer said then.

The first complaint about the problem occurred in September 2021. However, it did not cause any injuries or deaths, according to the October recall report.

Honda told owners to have dealers “replace the worm gear spring with an improved part and redistribute or add grease” on the recalled vehicles to correct the problem.

FCA USA has recalled more than 1.03 million vehicles

FCA US recalled more than 1.03 million vehicles from several brands in mid-June due to a radio software problem that could have affected the rear-view camera display.

A rearview camera image “that is not displayed reduces the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said in June, citing requirements for rearward visibility for vehicles.

Certain 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacificas, 2021-2022 Dodge Durangos, 2022-2023 Jeep Compasses, 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokees, and 2020-2020 Jeeps were among the vehicles affected, according to the recall report were made also for 2022 Some models of Ram 1500s, 2500s and 3500s, as well as 2022-2023 model year Ram Promasters.

The automaker issued a free update to the radio software to fix a possible rearview camera display problem.Owners were notified in early August.

Spokesperson for Stellantis said FOX Business in June that the radio software problem was not related to any injuries or accidents.
