The US surgeon general links alcohol to cancer risk in a new advisory

The US surgeon general has issued a new warning about the risk of alcohol-related cancer.

Dr. Vivek Murthy issued the guidance on Wednesday following a study linking alcohol to at least seven types of cancer.

The advisory specifically notes that cancer can increase the risk of throat, liver, pharynx, esophagus, mouth, larynx (voice box) and colorectal cancer.

“Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer, accounting for nearly 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year—more than the 13,500 alcohol-related traffic deaths in the U.S. each year—yet most Americans are unaware of this risk,” he said. Murthy on advice.
