Jamie Dutton’s Yellowstone Grief Affects Actor Wes Bentley’s Everyday Lifebut the character’s existential woes are understandable. In the end, Jamie killed his biological father, lost both of his adoptive parents, and never fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a rancher (he became a lawyer instead). However, it also doesn’t help that his sister, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), is mercilessly hostile towards him during every conversation they have. So what about her?

Some people argue that Beth is a sociopath whose treatment of her brother is unfair, especially after she unironically encouraged him to commit suicide in Yellowstone Season 2 episode “Resurrection Day” because he was emotionally vulnerable after the cold-blooded killing an innocent reporter. However, Beth may have good reasons to hate him, stemming from an incident in their teenage years that essentially destroyed her chances of ever being truly happy.

Since then, Jamie’s actions have given Beth more reason to hate him, and some of her fears about his loyalty to their family have unfortunately come true. With that in mind, let’s explore all the reasons behind their bitter feud.

Jamie is the reason Beth can’t have children

This is the main reason Beth Dutton hates her brother, and it goes back to their teenage years. It all started after she got pregnant and asked Jamie to help her get an abortion, so he took her to a free clinic outside of town and sterilized her without her consent.

Beth’s anger at Jamie grows as Yellowstone progresses, especially after she decides to settle down with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) once and for all. Beth fears that her husband will never feel fulfilled in their relationship because she will never be able to bear him a child, and she carries some guilt over the abortion because the teenage Rip was the father but didn’t know it at the time.

Moreover, Beth learns about her own son Jamie in Yellowstone Season 5, which creates more animosity towards him. Afterwards, she tells him he doesn’t deserve to be a father and threatens to take away everything he loves, though it remains to be seen if she meant forcibly adopting his child or committing a heinous act against the child.

Beth doesn’t trust Jamie in all of Yellowstone

Contrary to popular belief, Jamie Dutton wasn’t always bad news. As the family’s lead attorney, he once did everything in his power to serve their interests, even if they deserved to go to jail. However, their relationship sours after family patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) destroys Jamie’s political ambitions by running against him for the governorship of Montana. This led to Jamie spilling all the dirt about his family to a reporter, who he later killed to keep the story out.

Beth didn’t trust Jamie after the aforementioned sterilization incident, but finding out he betrayed their family was another nail in the coffin of their relationship. Furthermore, Jamie has suggested that the family sell some of their land to ensure financial comfort (and boost his political prospects), so Beth sees him as a threat to their way of life, especially after he calls for John’s impeachment while working undercover along with the people who want to end them. This stupid family, right?

However, Beth may be right about Jamie not being trustworthy. In addition to shooting his original father, he is partially responsible for death of John Dutton — and anyone who watches Yellowstone knows that Beth is a daddy’s girl through and through.

Beth blames Jamie for her father’s death in Yellowstone Season 5

Jamie is partially responsible for John Dutton’s death in Yellowstone Season 5. His lover Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) hires hitmen to take him out of the game and make it look like suicide, and Jamie is more or less supportive of her decision after she tells him about it. However, he first mourns his father, proving that Sarah acted of her own free will and that some humanity remained in Jamie.

Of course, Beth immediately suspected that Jamie was behind her father’s murder from the moment she found out he was dead. John’s death outraged many Yellowstone fans.but that’s nothing compared to the anger Beth feels for her brother. She vowed to kill her brother, but her other brother, Casey Dutton (Luke Grimes), convinced her to hold off until they had proof.

They eventually find out that Jamie was involved, so Beth breaks into his house, buries him with a knife, and forces Rip to dump his body at the “train station” — which is actually the out-of-state canyon where all the skeletons are. in the Dutton family closet. Moreover, Beth told the police that Jamie attacked her and ran away, ensuring that she also destroyed her brother’s high profile in the public eye, as news outlets later reported the story. Jamie’s loss of reputation would upset him more than getting stabbed, so Beth had the last laugh.
