Melbourne, Australia — A the hiker survived Two muesli bars, foraged berries and stream water have gone missing in a fortnight in a remote Australian mountain range, police said on Wednesday.

Hadi Nazari, a 23-year-old medical student from Melbourne, went missing on December 26 when she left two hiking companions to take photos in Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales.

He was rescued Wednesday afternoon after he approached a group of hikers and said he was missing and thirsty, Police Insp. Josh Broadfoot said. Nazari had traveled more than 6 miles from where he was last seen through steep and densely wooded terrain.

On the day of his disappearance, a huge search was launched on land and in the air. More than 300 searchers were involved.

Broadfoot was reunited with his two hiking buddies on Wednesday before being taken to hospital for medical evaluation.

Broadfoot said Nazari said the police were “walking around from morning to night”.

“He looks good: amazing,” Broadfoot told reporters.

“This is the 14th day we’ve been looking for him. It’s unbelievable that he’s out and in such good spirits and in such great condition,” he added.

“There are some creeks up there and he said he was finding water where he could and foraging where he could in terms of berries. At one point he said he found a couple of muesli bars in the hut, but other than that it’s 14 days and that’s very little food,” Broadfoot said.

Ambulance Insp. Adam Mover said Nazari only needed a cure for thirst.

“He’s in great shape for someone who’s been missing for a long time,” Mower said.

The national park includes Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. But Australia is a relatively flat continent and the mountain is only 7,310 feet above sea level.

Current Southern Hemisphere summer weather is mild.

The searchers hoped that Nazari would be found alive. He was an experienced hiker equipped with a tent. Searchers found his campfire, camera and walking poles in recent days, suggesting he had continued walking.
