Seth MacFarlane’s underrated sci-fi series Orville may have been seen as a comedic parody Star Trek: The Next Generationbut it didn’t take long for Jonathan Frakes to give his blessing. The man who invented the Riker Maneuver not only directed “Priya,” the show’s fifth episode, but during the 2016 Comic Convention. explained, “The Star Trek that we have has really found its voice, and Opening really found his voice. I Orville filled the void. For many people Orville is their new Star Trek because it tells stories like (The next generation), and it has a wild sense of humor.”
Jonathan Frakes is an Orville fan

Orville earned Jonathan Frakes early praise, and the actor-turned-director noted that Seth MacFarlane made the choice to fill the writer’s room and production team with Star Trek veterans. Enlisting Brennan Braga, writer of some of the best TV episodes and the best Trek film, First contactto another actor-turned-director Star Trek Voyager.Tom Paris, Robert Duncan McNeil, who directed the second episode of the show “Command Performance”. Even cinematographer Marvin Rush was brought in, and Frakes approved, saying, “He filled the room The next gen people to make the show look and feel that way. I think he did it.”
Delving into why Orville was a success, Jonathan Frakes also stated, “I think Seth’s fans expected the show to be much bigger Family guy than he ever wanted. Part of what he’s done by hiring (Star Trek veteran) Brennan (Bragg) and others is to tell Star Trek stories that have moments of absurdity and the humor that we’ve come to know. But it was never emphasized and never expanded upon, and if you blink sometimes you miss the humor, and I think that approach worked in the first season. Now in season two, we have these character studies.”
For MacFarlane, he never set out to capture the morality at the heart of the best Star Trek episodes, he created the feel of a classic series. Orville Jonathan Frakes says that fans are used to seeing on The next generation. Frakes believes fans have an opportunity to embrace both MacFarlane’s love and Star Trek: Discoverywhich took the franchise in a bold new direction.
There were no fans discovery, which, in contrast Orville, abandoned the classic “Star Trek” and adopted the cinematic style of JJ Abrams Kelvinverseven Jonathan Frakes notes the difference, explaining that the style is “Much more cinematic, lots of crane work, lots of movement, lots of Dutch angles”. Brave new worlds also adopted a more cinematic style, but it was based more on the trappings of classic Trek compared to its parent series, so one is a fan favorite and the other… Opening.
Orville is the spiritual successor of the next generation

Orville and Opening both share that Jonathan Frakes directed episodes in their first seasons. Frakes ended up returning to both shows Orville Season 2 episode “Sanctuary” where he brought Marina Sirtis along with it, followed by seven more episodes Opening and one Brave new world the episode. So when he says you can be a fan of both and enjoy each series for different reasons, he knows what he’s talking about.
For now Orville never got around to putting Jonathan Frakes in front of the camera, there’s still hope for a season 4. Tim Russ, Tuvok u Voyagerappeared, like his co-star, Robert Picardand Enterprise even featured thanks to John Billingsley, Phlox appearing in “Home”. That’s not even counting the main cast members who appeared in both franchises: Seth MacFarlane (Enterprise), Penny Johnson Gerald (TNG and DS9) and Scott Grimes (TNG).
Not every fan Star Trek: The Next Generation is a fan Orville like Jonathan Frakes, but they should be. Frakes is right; no other show has captured the look, feel and tone of the greatest of all time science fiction series like MacFarlane’s comedies. Now how can we get Patrick Stewart appear in season 4?
