At 92, Edward Thorpe is still a force of nature, offering timeless advice on longevity.Reflecting on his health scare, Zerodha founder Nitin Kamat called Thorpe’s insights “brilliant,” underscoring their relevance in a fast-paced, high-stress world.

Thorpe, the legendary mathematician and investor, divides longevity into two main strategies: defense and offense. – he explains.

This includes regular checkups, a balanced diet, and addressing potential health problems before they escalate.

Regarding crime, Thorpe says exercise is a “magic bullet.” “Moderate exercise can add years to your lifespan and even more to your health by keeping you stronger and more active longer,” he adds.

Kamath’s endorsement of Thorpe’s philosophy comes from personal experience: In 2024, Kamath suffered a mild stroke, which he openly discussed on social media. “Father’s death, poor sleep, exhaustion, dehydration and overload. any of these could be probable cause,” he wrote at the time.

Kamath’s recovery journey included regaining focus and physical function, and his doctor emphasized the importance of knowing when to “shift gears a little bit.”

Kamath has long championed the importance of health, both personally and professionally. In 2022, he introduced a fitness challenge at Zerodha, offering a month’s salary bonus to employees who hit 90% of their fitness goals for the year.

“A minimum of 350 active calories per day, in any form,” Kamat said, emphasizing the need for daily movement in an increasingly sedentary work environment.

For Kamat, Thorpe’s advice resonates deeply.
