A year after three Kansas City Chiefs fans were last seen alive, it’s still unclear why they died in a friend’s snowy backyard — and authorities have not filed any criminal charges in their deaths.

Clayton McGeeney, 37; Ricky Johnson, 38; and David Harrington, 36, visited longtime friend Jordan Willis’ home in Kansas City on Jan. 7, 2024, to watch the Chiefs play the Los Angeles Chargers.

Two days later, three men were found dead on Willis’ property by McGeeney’s fiancé. Willis could not be reached for comment According to the family members who were looking for his 3 friends who did not return home, he did not open his door for days by phone.

Although preliminary autopsy results Family members of the dead men have questioned Willis’ involvement in what happened, and some have threatened to file a lawsuit, while family members shared with the media that fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana were in their systems.

In September, Willis’ attorney, John Picerno, told Fox News Digital that, based on “internal discussions” with prosecutors, “charges will be filed within a few weeks.”

When asked who would be prosecuted in the men’s deaths, Picerno replied: “If someone supplied drugs to these young men, the criminal liability could be a charge of felony murder.”

But lawyers for Picerno and the men’s family members said there had been no progress since then.

Picerno said in September that the length of the investigation, which the Kansas City Police Department repeatedly described as a death investigation rather than a homicide investigation, was “extraordinary.”

He also said that his client voluntarily handed over all his electronic devices to the police along with DNA samples at the beginning of the investigation.

“I don’t know what caused this investigation to take more than nine months,” Picerno said. “That would be a better question answered by the prosecutors.”

“There is nothing to report or comment on at this time,” a spokesperson for the Platte County District Attorney’s Office told Fox News Digital. “It’s still an ongoing investigation. I guess when something is done, (Platte County Prosecutor) Eric (Zahnd) will put out a press release. Unfortunately, we don’t have a timeline for a report.”

The Kansas City Police Department could not be reached for comment at press time.

Although he is “confident” his client will avoid prosecution, Picerno said in September that a civil suit was on his horizon. He said he had been contacted by attorneys representing the men’s families, and that the statute of limitations for such cases in Missouri is five years.

Jennifer Marquez, David Harrington’s mother, told Fox News Digital that this is the “first (she’s) heard” of the action in the case. Until he hears more from the prosecutor’s office, he said he will “keep calm and not give up hope.”

“I’m certainly glad to hear that something might happen,” he said Tuesday.

“I haven’t been told anything,” he continued. “They just didn’t release any information to us, the families, so I don’t have any information. We didn’t get an autopsy or anything like that. They don’t want us to be able to release anything. That would hurt the case, I think. “

“Of course, I would like people to take responsibility for this, and I think Jordan should take responsibility,” Marquez said. “It was his house, he had a party and you know.”

Willis, who moved out of his Kansas home and enrolled in a rehab program after his friends died, “has had his life changed forever,” Picerno said.

“It’s a terrible thing for people to assume you’re guilty without real evidence,” Picerno said. “It’s a tough lineup and he’s handling it as best he can.”

A source close to the Willis family told Fox News Digital that the 39-year-old Ph.D. the owner and research scientist is “still grappling with the implications of it all.”

“(He) not only lost good friends, but a lot of people turned on him,” the source said.

“It’s affected every part of his life and he’s doing the best he can,” the source said. “She’s helping take care of her dad this year and trying to stay positive.”
