The first details of the next film from the director of Nosferatu Robert Eggers have become known
After telling one of the most famous vampire stories of all time, the biggest nerd in horror history is about to go even further into the annals of the past: The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Robert Eggers’ next project will be set in the 13th century and is set for a Christmas 2026 release. Naturally, this project will be about werewolves.
The film will be called Werwulf, and in addition to directing it, Nosferatu and The Witches director Eggers is also writing the screenplay with Sjön, the Icelandic poet, writer and screenwriter who helped write The Northman in 2022. Despite exploring a more monochromatic color palette with last year’s Nosferatu, THR reports that Eggers decided to shoot the upcoming film in color after originally planning to shoot it in black and white. It also appears to be returning to its deeply geeky historical roots, as a source says the monster thriller, set in England, will use period dialogue and feature an unusual visual choice: annotations and translations of Old English words.
The action of Robert Eggers’ film “Werewolf” will unfold in England in the Middle Ages
It should be noted that people during the time period in question did in fact speak Middle English, although it is unclear whether the source was wrong on this point (they are commonly confused). Nevertheless, it is very exciting to hear that the ultra-disciplined and detail-oriented director is about to get into the weeds linguistically as Eggers’ first three films (A24’s The Witch and The Lighthouse and Focus Features’ The Midnighter) used exceptionally realistic (and complex) dialogue, while his last film had all the German characters speak fairly modern English. Eggers will once again team up with Focus Features this time around, marking the third collaboration between the director and the Universal Studios division. Eleanor and Chris Columbus will executive produce the film along with Eggers and Schön.
Eggers’ latest film, Nosferatu, has been a better-than-expected mainstream success, earning $156 million in the weeks since its late December release. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd, the film is a whimsical remake The famous deception of “Dracula” by F.V. Murnov. Critics have divided it somewhat (it currently has 84% on Rotten Tomatoes), but impressed several members of the /Film crew, including critic Chris Evangelista. He called the film “scary, sexy, weird, and sad all at once” in his review.which gave it a score of 9 out of 10.
Casting and full plot details for Werewolf are still to come. The film is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2026.
