The evolution of Mindy Kaling’s body, dieting over the years
Mindy Kaling has been open about her health for years.
Many fans got to know the comedian thanks to her character OfficeKelly Kapoor, who made her debut in 2005. In addition to her recurring on-screen presence, Kaling was in the writer’s room. During the Season 5 episode, Kelly went on a Beyoncé-inspired diet, replacing her meals with a cleansing product consisting of lemons, cayenne pepper, water and maple syrup.
In the same year Kaling published her first book, Is everyone hanging out without me? In a candid memoir, she wrote about creating an “improvisational diet formula” in high school after a classmate told her she “would be really pretty when she lost weight.” As a result, Kaling “ate exactly half of what I was given and no dessert.”
The actress explained that she “stayed at a pretty normal weight until college,” when she gained 35 pounds in the first six months of her freshman year. She lost weight by introducing exercise into her life, but said she will be “chubby for life” for four reasons: she has “no hobbies other than dieting”, she has “no discipline”, the men she “dates “, I really like them. Me,” and she’s “very happy with the way I look, as long as I don’t break a beach chair.”
Kaling’s new approach to wellness came after she began losing her baby weight. She welcomed her daughters Catherine and Ann in 2017 and 2024 respectively, and son Spencer in 2020.
