The Chargers last used the NFL rule by making successful free throws in 1976
Really? Thursday night football unless there is some kind of weirdness?
Well, on Thursday, the Denver Broncos-Los Angeles Chargers The last time the game had an event was in 1976.
With eight seconds left in the half and the Broncos leading 21-10, they punted the ball away in hopes of running out the clock and sending both teams to the locker room.

The good news is that the clock has hit zeroes – the bad news is that Denver was called for fair catch interference.
Of course, it can’t end with a halfback penalty or a flag by the kicking team, so the Chargers had an opportunity to “take a fair kick” after the penalty put them 15 yards ahead.
Cameron Dicker was able to line up for a 57-yard field goal without any rush, before some confusion on both sidelines — in fact, he didn’t even need to snap the ball. In fact, it was as representative of practice as a real shot could get.

Dicker did, of course, and instead took an eight-point lead Enter Denver instead of winning 21-10 at the half.
Ironically, the last successful “fair hit” was performed by Ray Wersching of the San Diego Chargers in 1976.
It was the 27th recorded fair hit in NFL history, including the postseason, and the seventh that went through the posts. The last attempt before Thursday’s was in 2019, when Joey Slye ran for 60 yards.
Dicker’s punt is the longest punt in NFL history, surpassing Paul Hornung’s 52-yarder in 1964.

The Chargers had nine missed attempts between the two free throws, but that was the shortest. It was not unusual for a kick to reach more than 70 yards, as fair catches are usually caught on the opposite side of the field.
