The opening minutes of the first episode show how Tommy Norris is built differently as he negotiates with the cartel after they kidnap him, his hands tied and covered in burlap, and yet he’s the most dangerous man in the room.

In the first four minutes LandmanTommy, played by Billy Bob Thornton, with an instantly recognizable stretching voice even under a burlap sack, explains to the cartel that the oil company he works for are not the type of people to piss off. Low-key and surrounded, he lets them know that if something happens to the company’s assets, it’s not just the fleet drones will blow their houses off the map, but they will set up a DEA office across the street. The ins and outs of renting services are explained, an agreement is signed that boils down to “don’t mess with us, we don’t mess with you” and then finally Tommy is released and let go.

It’s a bold sequence to start the series with, and it’s one of the best abduction/kidnapping (or negotiation, as it turns out) scenes thanks to Billy Bob Thornton’s confident performance as Tommy keeps things under control without ever letting us see him. face The threats are pompous and grandiose, but as it turns out, it sets the stage for the rest Landman. In truth Taylor Sheridan fashion, while Tommy is extremely confident in his abilities and not the type of person anyone wants to see as an enemy, when he is finally freed he takes out a cigarette and we see his battered, battered face and haunted eyes , which makes you question how much of his bravado is a carefully constructed charade.

Billy Bob Thornton was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Tommy Norris, despite Landman the first season is only halfway through.
