As a child of the 80s and a horror buff, I especially love slasher movies, a genre popularized by gory icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. This genre reached its peak with the release of Wes Craven Scream in 1996, and fans like myself have been chasing the dragon ever since in hopes that another director could create a similar blend of humor, horror, and gore. Now, the most unexpected director has done just that, and fans are hoping to experience the best slasher movie since Scream can now be streamed Thanksgiving Day on Netflix.

Thanksgiving on Netflix

thanks to Ellie Roth

When you look Thanksgiving Day on Netflixyou’ll discover a truly insane story about a turkey-loving town still reeling from the Black Friday shopping stampede that left three people dead. As the same big name store prepares to hold a similar sale next year, karma arrives in the form of a killer wearing a truly terrifying mask in the style of John Carver, the first governor of Plymouth Colony. As the murders get even uglier than your drunken uncle talking politics, a group of teenagers who survived the initial stampede try to stay one step ahead of a killer whose revenge is one dish that’s never served cold.

If you just flew by Thanksgiving Day watching Netflix, you might not realize how impressively eclectic this film’s cast is. Arguably the biggest name is Patrick Dempsey (best known for his appearances on Grey’s Anatomy), who plays a sheriff trying to save the town from the most vicious threat it has ever faced. Rounding out the cast are some screen veterans like Gina Gershon (best known for her role in Bound) and Rick Hoffman (best known for his performance in Samantha Who?), as well as relative newcomers like Addison Ray (best known as a popular influencer on social media platforms like TikTok).

In addition to Dempsey, the other big name involved in this production is director Eli Roth, a horror veteran known for such holidays as Boarding school. Compared to this franchise, killing in Thanksgiving Day are generally more subdued, making this movie a bit more accessible to the average Netflix viewer. But Roth still knows how to crank up the scares in a movie to the max, as evidenced by the oven scene that will no doubt have you sitting on a couch cushion while you watch it.

A hearty dish of horrors

Fortunately, the audience didn’t flinch at Roth’s efforts: long before that Thanksgiving Day ended up on Netflix, it grossed $46.6 million on a $15 million budget. It was enough of a holiday box office hit to justify a sequel, and Roth claims that Thanksgiving 2 will be released later this year. Not bad for a Madman franchise that started with Roth’s tongue-in-cheek trailer for the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino horror classic Grindhouse.

surprisingly Thanksgiving Day managed to impress the critics, which is relatively rare when it comes to slasher films. incl Rotten tomatoesthis thick piece of turkey-inspired terror has an 84 percent critical rating. Overall, the film has been praised by critics for its unique blend of humor and horror and the way it combines creative kills with scenes and dialogues that are sure to make you laugh.

When I finally looked Thanksgiving Day on Netflix, I was surprised to find that the critics weren’t exaggerating… this might be the best slasher movie since Screamwhich is a good thing, because scene after scene is spent Wes Craven-esque. Fortunately, Eli Roth manages to blend in Scream-a similar sensibility with his own brand of humor and bloody violence. In addition to the horror movie quality, Thanksgiving Day it’s safe to say that Roth is at his best, with the film toning down the excesses of his Hostel films while amplifying the broad humor that his debut film attests to Salon feverwhich makes it a crowd pleaser infinitely more accessible than, say, Green hell.

THANK YOU REFALL

Will you find it? Thanksgiving Day the kind of movie that keeps you coming back for seconds, or do you think this Netflix slasher needs more time in the oven? You won’t know until you see for yourself on Netflix. Just keep in mind: When Eli Roth prepares a new film, he uses a a lot cranberry sauce.
