The Athletic editorial staff unionizes with The NewsGuild of New York, asks the NYT to recognize membership

The editorial staff of The Athletic announced Monday that it has arranged with The NewsGuild of New York to become a part. New York Times Newsroom union, The Times Guild.
Now, The Athletic is asking New York Times management to unionize its employees in an email to Times Publisher AG Sulzberger and CEO Meredith Kopit Levien on behalf of nearly 200 editorial staff across the US. press release shared with Fox News Digital.
“We are proud of what The Athletic and The New York Times as a whole have done since our acquisition in 2022, and we know that our inclusion in the Times Guild will only strengthen our work,” it said. in the letter.

The New York Times acquired the online sports news site in 2022, and while management initially insisted that The Athletic’s operations would be separate, they were integrated into the newsroom, Times management said in a press release is the New York Times sports desk in September 2023, and the job has been assigned to Times staff assigned to The Athletic.
Time Guild leaders also sent a statement to management stating that they fully support The Athletic’s inclusion in their union.
