The 20 -hot opening with open source from 2024.
A new report shows the 20 top open sources worldwide, more than half of which are closely aligned with AI.
The report is the manual work of European venture company Runa Capitalwho has managed the Runa open source (Ross) An index since 2020S The index serves quarterly updates to the fastest growing projects with regard to the “stars” of the GitHub-indicator, which is something similar to “as” in social media. Starting in 2023, Runa begins Preparation of annual reportshighlighting the most popular open source commercial startups in a given year.
A report last year demonstrates that AI and data infrastructure have stimulated the search for open source tools, with Langchain A struck pole position in the Ross Index for its Open Code for Building LLM-Orientated Apps.
This year is a similar story, with AI Central up to 11 of the top 20 companies.
It is worth noting that the Ross index is highly curated and does not include any old open source project. Qualification projects must be closely linked to a trading company (ie a project led by suppliers), which means that there are no side projects. In addition, these companies must be younger than 10 years; raised less than $ 100 million in funding; And to be completely independent – so it is not a subsidiary or publicly listed.
Stargazing
The first of the Ross 2024 Index is OlamaY combinator Alum This is an open -operated LLMS startup tool as a Meta’s Calls and Deepseek locally (ie, desktop). Olama Count of the GitHub star Increased by about 76,000 to 2024, increasing 261% to over 105,000 (since then it has increased to over 135,000 stars in the last few months).
The next one on the list is Zed Industriescross-platform Cooperation Code “Designed for high -efficiency cooperation with people and AI.” The ZED project has existed for some time but it I just went with an open code in January 2024 and during the rest of the year won more than 52,000 GitHub starsS
Third is Langgeniumthe company behind an open source applications development platform called DiphS The project has achieved more than 43,000 new Github stars Last year, 326% of about 13,000 to nearly 57,000 increased, a figure, which has since increased to over 84,000 stars.
And then there is ComfyuiA program based on an open code for image generation, videos and audio using generative AI models. Project Count of the GitHub star Last year, 195% increased to 61 900 stars.
The rounding of the front five is All handsthe company behind an open source platform called Open -Hand To build software development agents. OpenHands has collected 39,600 Github stars from the launch last March to the end of 2024 and has since added 12,000 more stars to the mixture.
While the Ross Index for last year illustrates explosive growth in AI and LLMS, it also shows how developer tools are still hot in the open code world, with the likes of ZED and UV on Astral (No. 9) Both participating in the top 10. In another place, the presence of a PDF manipulation tool Sterling pdf (No 7), Funding Software Maybe finance (No 8) and remote desktop software Rustdesk (No. 17) suggests that the host aimed at confidentiality is still in high demand.
And Etheraum Blockchain focused Fuel (No 12) shows that Crypto/Web3 is alive and kicking.

The open source software has always been distributed, given that participants from all angles of the globe can be included. This often happens for projects led by suppliers; However, shopping formations usually have some center of gravity – even if it just means when it is officially turned on.
Last year’s Ross Index shows that San Francisco is home to six of Ross’s top 20 startups, while Canada has three, and Europe (UK, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic), Singapore and China, constituting the others.
Methodology
There are other ways to track hot projects with open source. Two sigma endeavors operate Open source indexwhich is similar in concept to the Ross Index, except that it shows the top 100 projects without a specific focus on commercial startup companies (it also offers different ways to filter data).
And GitHub himself offers a List of Best TrendsAgain without the specific focus on the commercial business.
Also worth a look at Methodology Behind the Ross Index. GitHub’s “stars” can be an imperfect indicator as this simply shows that someone has “liked” the project, as opposed to active use or observation. Older projects will naturally buy more “stars”, which is why RUNA focuses on the relative growth of repositories for a 90-day period for its quarterly reports and on the absolute number of new stars received during the year for their annual report.
It also means that the annual report may seem quite different from the quarterly reports, given that the absolute number of stars does not always be aligned with the rapid models of relative growth.
There may also be some problems around what is classified as an “open code”. While many of the projects in the list are indeed put under a recognized Copyleft or Open Code Permitting LicenseThis is not a strict arrangement for the Ross Index. Rune says he or she adheres to the “commercial perception” of an open code rather than the A formal definition of open sourceS As such a company that released its software under the public license by the server (Sspl), for example, will still qualify as an open code, although Open code initiative has not joined the destruction SSPL as an “open code”.
However, the index is a useful indicator not only to what kind of open source technologies is a trend, but also what companies are trying to build their business over them.
