Syria’s new regime, led by HTS, is strengthening its police force with the help of its fighters
After the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, most of the police and soldiers working under the regime have fled or been dismissed, and citizens have been left defenseless on the streets of Damascus. Syria’s new leadership, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — the leaders of the rebellion — is now relying on several thousand fighters and volunteers to fill the void. FRANCE 24’s James André and Achraf Abid reported from Damascus.
