Horror isn’t a genre you’d normally associate with music, although there are some killer musicals out there, including old classics like The Rocky Horror Show and new features such as Anna and the Apocalypse. However, the only problem with horror musicals is that they tend to focus more on the gritty Broadway style than the gore. If you are like me and have been searching perfect a mix of tunes and terror, you’re in luck: Turnip! Genetic opera now streaming for free on Tubi.
The plot of Repo! Genetic opera

Based on the musical of the same name, Turnip! Genetic opera set in a bleak future where most of humanity has been wiped out due to widespread organ failure. GeneCo, a ruthless company, would transplant organs to those with the money to save lives while creating a culture of hedonistic body modification. But if someone misses a payment, those organs can be returned, and when GeneCo’s founder receives a terminal diagnosis, it puts him on a collision course with his Repo Man, who will change everything.
The cast Turnip! Genetic opera small but full of familiar faces, including a surprise appearance by Paris Hilton and even a cameo by Joan Jett. Plays our main character Children of spies veteran Alexa Vegas, and horror icon Bill Mosley memorably plays one of the losers of the GeneCo Foundation. Meanwhile, the titular repo plays Buffy the Vampire Slayer legend Anthony Stewart Head, and the dying CEO is played by Paul Sorvino, who hasn’t been this perfect on stage since Baz Luhrmann Romeo+Juliet.
The failure of the cult

Despite this complexity, Turnip! Genetic opera was a box office bomb mainly due to its very limited theatrical release. On an $8.5 million budget, the film only made $188,126 (no, that’s not a typo). Fortunately, the film found new life on DVD and Blu-Ray, and has since gained a strong cult following that many have compared to The Rocky Horror moviesanother amazing horror musical that only became more popular as time went on.
The critics, of course, didn’t know what to do Turnip! Genetic opera: on Rotten tomatoesthe film received only 37 percent from critics. In general, critics were reluctant to praise the film for its style, but derided it for its crudeness and lack of substance in terms of narrative. Notably, however, the film has a 73 percent audience rating via Popcornmeter, which shows how much more it resonated with general audiences than with critics (who are historically very harsh on horror films).
Now it’s time to answer the question you’ve probably been screaming at your screen: why damn it I recommend you watch it Turnip! Genetic operaa movie that failed to even make $200,000 at the box office and is routinely panned by critics? On the one hand, the music is surprisingly addictive. It may seem like a minor thing, but given how much the lyrics to “Things You See In A Graveyard” live in my head without a rental, I can’t help but recommend this movie to other horror fans looking for some fresh ear candy.

Besides, for now Turnip! Genetic opera has some terrible performances (Paris Hilton deservedly won the Golden Raspberry Award for worst supporting actress), it also has some unforgettably wonderful ones. Paul Sarvino manages to deliver great lines and croon killer tunes while chewing every bit of scenery he can find, and I truly have never found this talented actor more captivating. As for Anthony Stewart Head, yes unbelievable reward as a Buffy fan to see him shed his staid librarian persona to play against type as an assassin of sorts with a heart of gold.
Finally, as a horror fan, I have to recommend Turnip! Genetic opera for trying something else. It’s a genre filled with tired tropes and stale ideas… like how many times do I have to care about teenagers being hunted in the woods or killer sharks terrorizing a small town? Turnip! takes big swings that don’t always add up, but stands out for being completely unique…the kind of ambitious horror freakshow splatterfest we may never see another director attempt to create.
