Sri Lanka announce T20I squad for New Zealand tour, no place for Dunith Wellalage

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced its 16-member T20I squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, which includes three T20 matches starting December 28. The team will be led by Charith Asalankawho takes the helm as captain, aiming to build on the team’s recent performances.

Team overview

The squad selected features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, reflecting Sri Lanka’s strategy to strengthen its T20 format. Noticeably absent from the lineup is Dunith Wellalagea promising all-rounder who has been dropped from the team considering the seamer-friendly pitches in New Zealand. His absence opens the door for other players to step up and contribute to the team’s success.

Chamindu Wickramasinghewho made his debut in the home series against the West Indies, retains his position as the only fast bowler in the team.

Upcoming matches

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand T20I series consists of three matches scheduled for:

  • 1st T20I: 28 December 2024 (Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui)
  • 2nd T20I: 30 December 2024 (Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui)
  • 3rd T20I: 2 January 2025 (Saxton Oval, Nelson)

After the T20I series, Sri Lanka will also play three ODIs against New Zealand on January 5, 8 and 11.

Context of the route

This tour comes after a disappointing Test series against South Africa where Sri Lanka suffered a 2-0 whitewash. The Islanders will be looking to regain form and confidence in the shorter format as they prepare for a competitive series against the Black Caps, known for their tough conditions and strong performances at home.
