Spider-Verse star John Mulaney transforms into Superman in SNL cut
Comic book fans had plenty to talk about when the first trailer of the movie “Superman” was released. in late 2024, introducing James Gunn’s new big-screen foray into Big Blue Boy Scout. David Carensuet is the new Man of Steel, and not only does he look good in red and blue, but he also looks like a downright awkward Clark Kent. However, fans probably didn’t expect another Superman to enter the fray so soon, and they certainly didn’t expect any of the stars of Spider-Man: Into the World to don the cape.
When a comedian John Mulaney hosted Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2024he dressed up as superman. Unfortunately, almost no one got to see it, as the sketch was cut after the dress rehearsal and never made it to the live show. Typically, one or two short sketches make their way onto the “SNL” YouTube channel just a day or two after an episode premieres. But in this case, “SNL” waited two months before airing a hilarious sketch in which Mulaney plays Superman meeting Lois Lane’s creepy roommate: Glenn Bechamel, played by Chloe Fineman (who will not be appearing in James Gunn’s new DC universe).
Take a look at John Mulaney’s abbreviated Superman sketch as “SNL” below.
Superman probably wouldn’t have saved Lois Lane’s roommate
The “SNL” Superman sketch with John Mulaney is set in the universe of the original 1978 Superman: The Movie, and they even used a fog filter (or at least replicated the visual style) to make the sketch look a lot more like the movie. However, you can’t help but notice that Superman’s costume isn’t exactly like the one from the movie, especially when it comes to Superman’s red underpants. In the movie, Christopher Reeve wears briefs that look like rabbits, but the suit Mulaney wears looks more like boxer briefs, making them unlike any version we’ve ever seen in movies or television. It’s a shame, because usually the costume department at “SNL” knocks it out of the park when it comes to this kind of precision.
Anyway, Superman arrives on Lois Lane’s roof to flirt with her and give her an exclusive interview, only to be interrupted by Lane’s nosy roommate, Glenn Bechamel. Devoted “SNL” viewers will know that the character first debuted on the riff on the reality series “Too Hot” as football player Travis Kelce makes his ‘SNL’ hosting debut..
The Superman sketch sounds a lot better with a seasoned comedian instead of a tough jock, but it’s easy to see why it didn’t air. Almost every sketch that aired on an episode of Mulaney’s “SNL” was good or great, and this one is just okay. At least Feynman’s character is fun, and it’s nice to see her easily pop up again. At the same time, I’m surprised “SNL” didn’t bury this sketch, if only to have David Carensuet host in 2025 and introduce his Superman to Glenn Bechamel.
Again, I can’t imagine Warner Bros. wanted their new Superman to have his little peanut poked live on TV.
