Sony is now the largest shareholder in FromSoftware’s parent company
Sony acquired a Kadokawa. This follows reports that Sony has been in talks . That doesn’t seem to be happening, but Sony has increased its total ownership of Kadokawa to ten percent after spending about $300 million on more stock. This makes Sony the largest shareholder of the Japanese publisher.
Sony likely made the move to get their hands on some of Kadokawa’s IP, which includes the entire list of FromSoftware games and franchises created by Spike Chunsoft and Gotcha Gotcha Games. Kadokawa also publishes a whole bunch of anime and manga. A press release notes that the two companies will now “discuss specific collaborative initiatives,” which will include “live-action films and TV dramas.”
Does this mean that we will get soon Elden Ring or Dark souls movie? These are some of Kadokawa’s most famous franchises, so it’s certainly possible. The companies also pledged to promote “the global expansion of a wide range of entertainment, including anime and games.”
As for console exclusivity, don’t hold your breath. Sony already owns a 14 percent stake in FromSoftware and similar games Elden Ring and Ax: Shadows Die Twice are available on PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles and for PC. For this purpose there is some co-op DLC is coming Elden Ring sometime next year.
