Skeleton Crew Episode 7 canonize villains from legends?
This article contains spoilers for “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” episode 7, “We’re Gonna Be In So Much Trouble.”
Star Wars: The Crew is a love letter to its franchiseand the Disney+ series is full of references to previous stories set in a galaxy far, far away. From dropping sneaky Star Wars: The Clone Wars easter eggs. to even the return of classic Star Wars swearing.creators Christopher Ford and John Watts clearly love the lore and history of the property. This trend continues in Episode 7, “We’re Gonna Be In So Much Trouble,” which contains a subtle nod to some of the pirates from the Expanded Universe, also known as Star Wars Legends.
In the episode, Brutus (Fred Tatascare) and Jod Na Naud (Jude Law) set out to find Attin so they can rob a hidden planet of its treasures. They eventually stumble upon a planet that Brutus’ crew believe is their destination and send Glerbo (Jacob Roanhaus) to investigate in a fighter jet. It won’t end well for him.
However, before embarking on his mission, the pirate says, “The Destroyer One is ready,” a reference to the gang known as the Ravagers. The Legends villains were based on the pre-Galactic Civil War planet Rishi, and it seems that Skeleton Crew has now slyly introduced them into the Disney-era Star Wars canon — but who are they and what’s their deal?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew pays homage to the Ravagers
‘Star Wars: The Crew’ has already paid tribute to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and Treasure Planet, which show that the series owes as much to Disney’s Amazing Adventures and other work as anything that came before it in the galaxy far, far away. What’s more, thanks to Jod Na Nauvoo and Brutus, The Skeleton Crew enhances the franchise’s pirate history with its original creations. However, the aforementioned scene in episode 7 takes a moment to honor the galaxy’s most vicious marauders of yesteryear.
The Ravagers made their video game debut in Star Wars: The Old Republic: Shadow of Revan, and let’s just say they have a bad reputation. The crew was originally captained by a pirate named Ruugar, but was overthrown by Lieutenant Karatani, because what’s a pirate story without a mutiny, right? The Ravagers are also known for gleefully killing people, which makes Jod’s mistreatment of children in Skeleton Crew look like kindergarten.
As of this writing, it is unknown if Glerb and his crewmates are directly connected to the Destroyers. Skeleton Crew is set in the New Republic era, so the Ravagers might have been ahead of their time. However, the pirates in the series could have some kindred connection to the Ravagers, or maybe Glerb just wanted to pay homage to the legendary unit. Either way, the subtle name-dropping of Glerbo suggests that the Ravagers are prominent in this timeline and are no longer the forgotten Legends-length villains they once were.
Star Wars: The Crew of Skeletons season 1 finale airs on January 14, 2025. at 6:00 PM PT on Disney+.
