Skeleton Crew Episode 5 secretly pays homage to the 80s classic
This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Crew of Skeletons, Episode 5.
Star Wars: The Crew of Skeletons borrowed ideas from Disney’s failuresand the series is one big love letter to Amblin and countless adventure stories. Needless to say, John Watts and Christopher Ford’s foray into a galaxy far, far away wears its influence on its sleeves, and Episode 5, “You’ve Got a Lot to Learn About Pirates,” is no different. Essentially, it pays homage to the beloved 80s movie about a group of young friends who set out to find a hidden lair full of treasure – much like the adventures that take place in this episode.
“Skeleton Crew” Episode 5 Shows Jod Na Naud (Jude Law), SM-33 (Nick Frost) and the Kids Continue Their Search The mysterious planet Atin of the Star Wars galaxy.. However, they are forced to stop on Lanup after learning of the notorious pirate Captain Renaud’s hidden treasure lair, which may contain the coordinates needed to find the children’s homeworld—and that will lead to trouble for them.
However, fans of 80s action movies may be reminded of The Goonies after watching episode 5. Adding to the similarities between both stories, the aforementioned pirate’s name, Donner, is spelled backwards. This is a reference to the director of “The Goonies”. the late Richard Donnerwho once gave sound advice to the creators of “Skeleton Crew”.
Richard Donner’s advice informed Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
John Watts and Christopher Ford are masters of telling stories about children in danger. Their horror film Clown follows a father who wants to treat his children after dressing up as a demonic circus performer. Cop Car is about kids who are hunted by a fearsome sheriff after they steal his car. Meanwhile, “Star Wars: The Crew of Skeletons” tells the story of children forced to move around a galaxy far, far away and about the various dangers in it. During the interview with GamesRadar+Watts described how Richard Donner helped him learn to tell stories involving children, which he brought into the Star Wars universe.
“I got this advice from Richard Donner, who I was lucky enough to talk to shortly before he passed away. He was talking about the cast of ‘The Goonies’ and said you don’t cast kids for a role, you cast kids for who they are.”
Watts explained that they had Donner’s advice in mind when casting the show’s young characters — Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Kay Bee (Kiriana Crater) and Neil (Robert Timothy Smith) — and it paid off. “Skeleton Crew” boasts great performances from its young cast members, and they wouldn’t seem out of place in a movie like “The Goonies.”
