'On Duty' pre-Season 2 Q&A: Final twists and spinoff ideas

The first season On duty had us on the edge of our seats — but where does Wolf Entertainment’s police procedural go next?

On dutywhich premiered Thursday, Jan. 9, focused on veteran training officer Tracy Harmon (Trajan Belisario) and her rookie partner Alex Diaz (Brandon Laracuente) as they responded to emergency calls on the streets of Long Beach, California. Their partnership came after the severe loss of Harmon and it took her a whole season and Diaz to start trusting each other.

The Prime Video series found a way to reset the dynamic when Harmon ultimately did not recommend Diaz progress. Instead, she forced him to resume novice training – with her. Viewers also learned more about Sergeant Lassman (Eric LaSalle) and Lieutenant Bishop (Laurie Laughlin) after initial questioning were they friends or enemies.

“We want a lot of different people to come to this show — who have different views about the police. And we want them to take what they take,” Belisario exclusively said Us Weekly. (Executive Producer) Eliot (Wolf) put it very well. He said, “We want to create a buffet, and we want everyone to come to the table and eat together.” That’s the point. We’re not going to say, “Oh, you have this idea, so you’re not welcome here.” You have this idea that’s why you’re not going to like this show.’ You will see people make incredible decisions (on screen). You will see how we make mistakes. No one is a hero. And these are people – they just do this work.”

Laracuente, meanwhile, remained just as intrigued about the future of the show, what the fans will be like.

“At least in my own experience, the show left me with more questions than actual answers. I hope the audience will feel it too,” he noted. “At the end of the day, we’re not trying to paint a narrative. … Hopefully viewers can relate to one of the characters (on the show) in some way, shape or form.”

Cast and creator Tim Walsh answered some burning questions about Season 1 — and where the story will go:

Where are Harmon and Diaz going?

In the season 1 finale, Harmon recommended that Diaz be given probation, which reunited them as partners. The decision shook their dynamic – but it is a step in the right direction in the long run.

“Harmon made that choice because, above all, she doesn’t want to lose him. She starts to feel—there’s nothing romantic between them—but she’s like a mama bear, and this is her cub. So over the course of the first season, they just bonded,” Walsh explained us. “She did it because deep down she believed Diaz wasn’t ready to move on because he had a hero complex. She doesn’t want to see him hurt like Officer Delgado. Her feelings are sincere, but she’s also like a mother who doesn’t want to part with her child just yet.”

Laracuente had a similar thought process about how Harmon decided to “protect” Diaz.

“She cares about him, and that’s what sets her apart from anyone else he would be paired with. The fact that after just losing someone in the very first episode, she decided to work with Diaz, who is a newcomer, is a testament to her character,” he noted. “Before Diaz gets in the car at the very end of the episode, I think he has a real question.”

Laracuente continued, “The question running through his mind is, ‘Can I trust this man?’ Finally he realizes, “God, she’s been taking care of me all this time. Everything she did was just to protect me and now I can see it.’

Meanwhile, for Belisario, turning point showed how much Harman still had left to teach.

“Any good teacher knows when he hasn’t done his job — and that’s not really a failure on Diaz’s part. He sees it as his own failure. But in reality, Harmon sees this as a shortcoming on her part. She didn’t do enough, or she didn’t set it up, and she still has a lot of work to do,” she said us. “She obviously believes in him. She cares a lot and she wants him for the rest of his career.”

Could the relationship between Harmon and Diaz turn romantic?

There was no allusion to Harmon and Diaz can become a couple in the future — but what’s the plan behind the scenes?

“Romance complicates it and gives it maybe a little more predictability. Whereas here we don’t have to fall into any of those traps or tropes,” Walsh teased us. “They can literally be two colleagues. They are two colleagues bound by the idea that they must watch out for each other and survive the next shift. I think adding romance will only make it more difficult. The other way allows us to be more free and to deepen the two characters.’

Who is the dream guest star?

Celebrity Guest Stars in Season 1 is included Chicago Fire‘s Monica Raymond, Ryan Dorsey and Bart Johnson. Walsh them Kurt Russell as his dream cameo role in the future, joking, “If I could get Kurt Russell in it, I could die very, very happy.”

Will other characters take over in Season 2?

Despite On duty mostly focusing on Diaz and Harmon, there’s room to expand — starting with LaSalle and Laughlin’s characters.

“They’re a big part of it,” Walsh confirmed. “The shortage is 100 percent. We are (already) preparing Season 2 and ideas and what it will be about (while we wait for the official update).”

Laughlin and La Salle, meanwhile, expressed their excitement to us.

“We certainly have the runway to see more of the two of us. The most interesting thing is that we all come together. How do all these characters fit together?’ – she noted. “They focus a lot on Harmon and Diaz on screen, but I think our approach is, ‘What’s the big picture for all of us as characters?’ … There is so much to explore. But we’re in good hands with good writers, so hopefully we’ll move forward.”

La Salle praised On duty for not making Lasman and Bishop “one-dimensional”, adding, “By the time you get to the end of this season, there are some dynamics that have really changed. It’s a great way to set up a great story — will we be lucky enough to get additional seasons.”

He continued: “Laurie and I just spoke and we’re curious as actors to see if there’s going to be more interaction between us. We’re in sync on a lot of things, but we also want to see what we’re out of sync with? How do they really feel about each other?”

Every TV spin-off we hope to see in 2025

2025 is a big year for TV spin-offs like The Handmaid’s Tale, 9-1-1, The Big Bang Theory and more expanding their on-screen universes. ABC intrigued Us with its promise of a second 9-1-1 spin-off. The original show focused on the Los Angeles EMS with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, (…)

Could there be one Chicago crossover — or an On Call spinoff?

Before co-creation On duty with Eliot WolffWalsh worked on Chicago police but this does not mean universes will intersect.

“I don’t want to do a crossover with any of the existing shows. I believe that we are in our own universe and they are in theirs,” he said us. “However, expanding our universe to other first responders is something we’re all very keen to do. Long Beach has paramedics. It depends on how well we can get the message across to people to watch the show.”
