Residual protocol Will bring us back to the era of science fiction cosmic political politics as it launches in the VR of Meta Quest Store and on Steam In the fourth quarter.

The virtual reality game is Space Flight Sim with a strategic layer that puts you in command of a galactic rebellion. The game was annoyed a few years ago on Steam on your computer as a 2D screen title, but now it comes out first to VR. On your computer you will be able to play it as a 2D screen game or VR if you wish.

The game is from Game Studios Progenitor, a small, independent team of science fiction fools and enthusiasts of SIM combat -headquarters in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They built a residual protocol as a love letter to games like Tie Fighter, X-Wing and Elite Dangous, with a story rooted in rebellion, politics and power. I am quite nostalgic for the flight of the past as a wing commander and rebel attacks and I would like to be able to explode more often the joystick of the flight.

Time to pull yourself?

The game has been released on Steam on the computer for several years on 2D screens, but now it goes to VR. And now he has a publishing partner for VR with Meta. With more than 51 million VR headsets on the market (Statista), VR is becoming a viable market for smaller game manufacturers.

Scott McCalum, Creative Director of Remnant Protocol, launched Progenitor Game Studios a few years ago after moving the hobby game to professional pursuit.

“We released a teaser to announce Reddit and YouTube,” McCalum said in an exclusive interview with Gamesbeat. “And Coray Seifert (Meta’s Link Manager) reached for us through Reddit DMS. He said,” Hey, I’m Corey. I work at Meta. That looks really cool. Send me an email. “

McCalum and his developers thought it was BS, but Seifert gave a legitimate meta and so they started talking. Seifert handed them over to the publishing team. And 11 months later, after a strict green light process, they had a deal.

“And since then, we have just been full -time. We are going as difficult as we can, since we have financial support. We can leave our daily jobs. It really lives a little dream for a little boy like me,” he said.

The studio has five people now.

“We are more or less charging this from the beginning and now that we have money, we brought a 2D artist and concept artist to help improve things, and now we are looking for some audio people who really finish this content,” McCalum said.

McCallum has been working on the game for about eight years. It is funny that there is a dragon that appears at the end of the trailer-mixing fantasy with science fiction. It turned out that everyone asked about the dragon, but they didn’t really have a great reaction to it

“It went so bad that it just turned into a joke,” he said. “We put it in an Easter egg in a closed mission, and this really has become a small meme in our community.”

Narrative game

Remove these capital ships.

In history, the game has been conducted by generations after the murder of the blessed mother, and you take the command of residual powers that are still true to the cause. From the sanctuary, your hidden rebel base deep in the outdoor territories, you wage a guerrilla war against the usurpers who rule with depressing power over the galaxy. Your mission: to create an underground movement that will eventually download
Totalitarian regime through sabotage and pad acts.

The action means that you will organize raids on advance, make alliances, produce ships, explore new technologies and lead your teammates to battle. Considered and overhanging against a spreading empire, you must be resourceful as well as ruthless if you can succeed.

As for the name of the title, this is a reference to the residual protocol that is activated to tell everyone to go and hide if the blessed mother is killed.

● Rebellion on a galactic rock. As commander of the sanctuary, the hidden rebel base from which you hit will make a difficult choice needed for a long campaign to restore the throne. It is up to you how your limited resources and staff for military efforts are allocated: operations, research, construction of ships, espionage, recruitment and more. The fate of the galaxy firmly rests on any decision you make.

● Intensive action to fight dogs. Grind in the cockpit and take a command from an avant -garde to your own personal fighter. Inspired by the classic of the past, genre veterans will enjoy a familiar experience to press the ship’s systems to the limit while juggling different components. Newcomers will find a quick adventure that is easy to take, but it is difficult to master.

● You are hunting. The enemy is actively looking for your secret base and any experience that progresses the goals of your campaign increases your fame and risk of detection. Your ability to adapt to developing situations, balancing the risk with the reward of each action will eventually determine your fate.

● Live, breathable galaxy. Many factions maneuver to secure their position in power a vacuum created by the murder of a blessed mother, each with its own goals and ambitions. This period of uncertainty creates the opportunity to operate, but any decision you make will shine during the shift of the political landscape of the galaxy. Be careful not to find yourself caught among those who would call you an ally, and those who declare you an enemy.

● Each campaign is unique. From the procedurally generated missions to the dynamic narrative elements, the butterfly effect of any decision you make for the results of each battle, nor two games will never be the same.

Approaches the market opportunity

Strike Craft cakes in a remnant protocol are very detailed.

The title will probably first come out on Meta, but will eventually support PCVR and 2D Steam screens.

“We also add more VR-oriented features to the ordinary version of the computer. If people want to play PCVR with their desktop desktops instead of the handset,” McCalum said. “It was a challenge that adapted something that was for 2D screens to VR. But it has always been a cockpit game, very friendly for head tracking and eye tracking, so adding a head-mounted display is not the biggest design challenge.

Technically, it’s still difficult, especially with interactive controls where you get a flight stick in VR.

“These are big challenges,” he said.

McCallum awaits # 1 The way people will play in VR is with Meta Quest Touch controllers. You can take the flight fields by hand and manipulate it in 3D. But other people have fantastic settings with computers where they can connect a gamepad or joystick via Bluetooth, he said. It’s an easier way to fly, he said.

The cockpit itself has always been very detailed to admire Flight SIM fans. The cockpit actually occupies about 60% of the screen real estate.

The game will work on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3, as they both have enough memory to launch the title until the original Meta Quest does it.

The game will probably cost $ 25 to $ 30, but the price has not yet been determined. McCalum hopes the campaign will take about 20 hours to complete over 20 missions. There are many secondary missions, such as espionage and intelligence missions as part of the campaign. Some missions also help the player collect the money or resources needed for future missions. It will not be completely linear.

The game has air battles that are either close to the land on the planet or up into orbit in the blackness of space. Players fly with small shock crafts, similar to the rebel alliance in Star Wars, fighting against the big capitals of the Evil Empire. There will be stealth gameplay and quick strokes. Players have to make the choice whether to make peace, negotiate with traders, or move away from the conflict.

The rest protocol brings us back to the Flightsim science fiction games.

There is still a lot of work to do. The company accepts Playtesters on its Discord Channel. And will appreciate the feedback when it enters.

VR Flight Sims have become a real market with titles like Elite: Dangous, Microsoft Flight Simulator and even a star citizen is still coming, McCallum said.

“Flight simulators are definitely big in VR. People like to be able to place their headphones, look around space as they fly through it.” So far, the feedback has been positive. But the market will tell us when we get there. “
