Sarah Michelle Gellar about strength training, food planning and hitting her protein goals
Between parenting, work on TV shows Dexter: Original sin and Buffy The Vampire Slayer Revival (!) And the juggling of the usual everyday chaos (such as finding out what is for dinner), Sarah Michelle Gellar has found a strategy that makes healthy eating feasible – even on the busiest days.

Nowadays, it focuses more on building strength than pursuit of weight loss – and it is just finding easy ways to eat more protein.
Like most of us, Sarah’s goals have evolved – she focused more on building strength and eating enough protein than anything else. So when she found something that caused her food to be less stressful and helped her get balanced meals on the table faster, she was fine. Therefore, it teamed up with myfitnesspal to start a food planner.
We signed up with her on Q&A with a quick fire for her to stay under tension, what’s in her lunch box on the scene, and small but weak habits that help her nourish her and her family without stress.
How did you change the way you eat to get more protein?
I love this question – because honestly, little changes can really change. For me it is all about facilitating protein and effortlessly. I’m not doing anything extreme – I’m a busy mother, I need things that work in real life. So I just started by realizing the protein more. Now I always ask, “Where is the protein?” When I do food or snack.
Several go-tos:
- I add Greek yogurt or cottage cheese to smoothies – it makes them cream and gives serious protein support.
- Instead of tokens, I will be a snack for baked chickpeas or turkey.
- In the morning I replaced the cereal with oat oat or eggs with a high protein content.
- And I love to add cannabis seeds to everything I can – yogurt, pancakes, you name it.
It is not the point to be perfect – it is about building small habits that add up. You do not have to rework your entire diet, just sneak into a small protein where you can. It keeps me all day feeling strong and full of energy.
Increasing protein intake has become more important to me because I have incorporated more strength training into my fitness routine.

Why did you start to focus more on strength training?
I wanted to feel strong. Over the years I have done a variety of trainings, but strength training was a complete converter of games. It is not a look – it is a sense of ability. I want to lift my children, wear food and just keep up with my life.
At some point, I realized that Cardio was not enough. Strength training helps protect muscles, promote bone health and it’s great for long -term wellness. Moreover, it seizes – reminds me that fitness is not about shrinking. It is about living fully.
What do you usually eat before and after strength training?
Before training I will eat something light with carbohydrates and a little protein – like a banana with almond butter or toast with honey and some Greek yogurt. Just give me energy without weighing me.
After training I focus on protein. A cocktail with protein powder, almond milk, berries and maybe some spinach is my usual. If I am really hungry, I make eggs with avocado toast or grilled chicken and vegetables. Recovery is as important as the exercise itself – and then thank my way to thank my body for showing up.
What does a typical diet day look like when you shoot?
Breakfast is usually overnight oats with almond milk, chia seeds, blueberry and almonds – something I prepared the night before and caught on the go.
I like to bring something from home-like salad, wrap or my bowl of Buddha with brown rice, Edamame, peas, chicken breast and soy bandage. It keeps it well if I don’t eat it right away.
Dinner? Freddie is a real chef in our house, so I’m always glad to steal his remnants to heat up again!

Why is home cooking and food planning as important as mom?
I didn’t grow up with food planning – it’s something I learned later in my life. Growing up, planning food was not something I am familiar with. I was brought up by a single parent in the apartment in NYC, where there was not much room for extensive food preparation!
After having children became a greater priority. I want to be for a long time and prepare a good example for them. I also want to have more control over what we eat and how we live our bodies.
But let’s be honest – I don’t have endless cooking hours. Between work and parenting I need meals that are realistic. Planning food helps me make the most of my time and ensures that we always have something nutritious – even during hectic weeks.
I do not know the perfection or meals worthy of Instagram. Only healthy, feasible options that correspond to real life.
Why did you want to try myfitnesspal food planner?
I love my Sunday routine – Farmer’s Market, then a grocery store – but I came home without a clear plan. Sometimes I bought things that I didn’t end, or I would climb in the middle of the week to find out dinner.
The idea of ​​a tool that can help me plan food, build effective shopping lists and support my health goals really attracted me. Especially with long days on the scene, it is so useful to have balanced meals ready to leave – including healthy lunches that I can bring with me and avoid the temptation of craft services.
Did it actually help?
Definitely. It helps me waste less food because I use ingredients across several recipes – things like herbs or leeks I have forgotten. I like the structure in the kitchen (unlike my husband, Freddie, who is more of a creative chef) and the food planner gives me the leadership I need.
