Ryan Gosling to star in Sean Levy’s Star Wars film.

This isn’t a training session: Ryan Gosling (Barbie, The Boy from Podenia) is coming to a galaxy far, far away. While much remains unanswered, the Oscar-nominated actor is currently in talks to star in one of Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars films. According to The Hollywood Reporterpublication reports that Gosling is slated to star in Sean Levy’s upcoming film in the legendary sci-fi franchise. Whether you feel good or bad about it, this is a big deal.

Levy’s mysterious Star Wars film began development in 2022 and is said to be working on a script with Jonathan Tropper, with whom he worked on Netflix’s The Adam Project. It was initially reported that the film could go into production after he finishes his commitments on Deadpool 3, aka Deadpool and Wolverine. Given the success of that film, now the biggest R-rated film in history with over $1.3 billion, it’s likely that Levy’s Star Wars project has skyrocketed up the priority list. According to THR, Gosling’s interest only helped that. It will likely be the next film in the series, which will begin production as early as this fall.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the report notes that it will be a stand-alone adventure. So that rules out being tied to it the new Star Wars trilogy developed by Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix, Star Wars Rebels). It’s also unclear who Gosling would play. Levy is also set to produce the film through his production company 21 Laps alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The last film in the franchise to hit the silver screen was The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Despite being a financial success, it ended the sequel trilogy on a mixed note, having to continue with the consistently divisive middle entry that was The Last Jedi. Since that time Lucasfilm and Disney developed many Star Wars projects.and only Jon Favreau “The Mandalorian and Grog” made it to the finish line. Set in the same universe as the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, this film will hit theaters in May 2026.

Gosling is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and Barbie is one of the biggest movies ever. The actor won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ken in the film, which only added to his star power. Some of his other notable works include La La Land, The Notebook, and Blade Runner 2049. Combined with Levy’s ability to generate crowd-pleasers certainly makes this an attractive combo in the eyes of Disney and Lucasfilm. Star Wars could use some faithful hits right now.

In addition to that project, Clone Wars maestro Dave Filoni is developing a movie that will bring together all the shows in the Mandalorian universe. James Mangold (Logan) is also working on a film that will show the beginning of the Jedi Order. Additionally, Daisy Ridley is set to return in a film that will see her build a new Jedi Order after the sequel trilogy. It remains to be seen whether they will all cross the finish line.

How soon can this film see the light? Originally, two Star Wars films were planned to be released in 2026.. However, Lucasfilm has removed the December 2026 film from the calendar, but the studio is keeping a December 2027 release date for the enigmatic title in the franchise.
