Struggle

  • The Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia fired 99 drones towards Ukraine overnight. daily breaks. The Air Force said that Kiev troops destroyed 65 drones and 30 disappeared from radar. Drone attacks took place in 6 regions of Ukraine.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that Moscow forces have captured the village of Zapadne in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine. The village is located on the west bank of the Oskil River, which for a long time formed the front line between the armies of the Kremlin and Kiev.
  • Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Yuliya Svyridenko said that since Russia’s large-scale intervention in Ukraine in 2022, Russia has attacked Kyiv’s energy facilities 1,200 times, including strikes on electricity generating facilities, distribution channels and gas facilities.
  • Russian courts upheld the life sentence of Alexander Permyakov, who was found guilty of causing serious injury to pro-Kremlin writer Zakhar Prilepin by blowing up his car in 2023. Prilepin’s driver was killed as a result of a bomb explosion.

  • Germany’s Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA) news agency reported that 8.48 billion dollars of the 13.8 billion dollars worth of arms and military equipment, which Berlin allowed to be exported in 2024, went to Ukraine.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met with German opposition leader Friedrich Merz and discussed “ways to further develop a just peace for Ukraine.” Zelensky said that they also talked about global challenges and the situation on the front line.
  • Zelensky also met with a number of other global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Discussions revolved around defense and security support for Kyiv, increased sanctions against Russia, mediation in the return of 53 children forcibly taken from Ukraine by Russia, and the possibility of “durable and lasting peace.”
  • Turkey’s “Anadolu” agency said that Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Davos should involve both Kiev and European allies in any peace agreement regarding Ukraine, and warned against hasty settlements that could be seen as a betrayal of Kiev’s sovereignty.
  • Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow sees only a small window of opportunity to reach an agreement with the new US administration under President Donald Trump, Russian news agency Interfax reported.
  • Trump issued an ultimatum to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to end “this ridiculous war ‘now'” with Ukraine, or face tariffs and sanctions on “everything Russia sells to the United States.” He threatened similar consequences for Russia’s allies.
  • Responding to Trump’s threats, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said that Moscow should see what Trump meant by the “deal”. Polyanski also said that while Trump is not responsible for the US’s “malign anti-Russia” policy, he now has the power to end it.
  • According to “Anadolu” agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the main causes of Moscow’s war with Ukraine cannot be stopped without solving and eliminating them. As reported, Lavrov said the Kremlin will only negotiate “credible, legally binding agreements that make it impossible to break them.”
  • Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the reconstruction of Ukraine, which has suffered an estimated $626 billion in war damage, will likely be the “project of the century” and an opportunity for the European Union’s economy.

Russian gas and oil

  • Moscow’s national daily newspaper “Kommersant” writes that with the help of Cyprus-based company “Ozbor Enterprises” the transportation of Russian gas to the separatist Transnistrian enclave of Moldova can be restored. It is reported that the company has reserved approximately 3.1 million cubic meters per day from the Russian-designed Turkish Stream gas pipeline within a month since February 1.
  • AFP news agency quoted Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean as saying that Russian troops should leave Transnistria to find a long-term solution to end the enclave’s energy crisis. Recean also accused the Kremlin of creating instability in Moldova and helping to establish a pro-Moscow government.

Regional Security

  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya discussed concerns about North Korea’s “political and security alignment” with Russia, as well as China’s support for the Kremlin’s defense industrial base.
  • EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas warned about this “Russia can test the readiness of the EU to defend itself in three to five years”, he said that the Europeans “need to wake up”.
  • British Defense Secretary John Healy said the Royal Navy had tracked a Russian spy ship that had been gathering intelligence and mapping Britain’s “critical underwater infrastructure”.
