Ruben Amorim has challenged Marcus Rashford to step up and lead by example if he wants to return to the Manchester United squad.

Rashford has been left out of Amorim’s last three call-ups, after publicly admitting his desire to seek a new challenge after being omitted from the Manchester derby.

Asked about what Rashford had not been able to show him that other players in the united The team has, Amorim insisted the 27-year-old has a unique set of responsibilities that he has yet to meet.

“Like any other player, the best he can be,” he said. “If you have great talents, (I expect) great performance, great responsibility, great commitment, it drives everybody forward at this point. Some guys have a great responsibility here because they’ve been here a long time.

“This is perhaps one of the lowest moments for our club, so we have to face it and be strong in this moment. That’s what I want from every player in the team.”

Amorim went on to confirm the reports Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United officials were not involved in his decision to drop Rashford.

“He wants to play,” Amorim said of Rashford. “He’s trying. It’s my decision and my decision alone.

“I talked to a lot of players individually during practice. I’m doing things my way. It’s the only way I know how. If I don’t do it, I’d lose, and I won’t lose. I know what. I’m doing it.”
